I don't mean to laugh, but is there a "right kind" of arthritus? I'd rather not have any, personally, But...my body chose without asking! lol

I have my own theory about why the rheumy's don't like to treat fibromyalgia patients...it is not something they studied much in medical school if at all, and there are not (as yet) any reliable diagnostic tests to identify it.

Also, there are no proven therapeutic regimens that work for everyone, and results of their treatment efforts cannot be objectively quantified by lab tests, MRI's, bone scans, etc. and therefore not emotionally rewarding for the doctors, who are trained in the "scientific method" of causes and cures.

I read recently that about 50% of most rheumys' practices are made up of fibro patients, and most of those patients were foist upon them by family doctors, neurologists, internists, chiropractors, endocrinologists and other specialties. The rheumy's did not "sign up" for us because we are frustrating to treat, require so many different types of meds, they cannot understand what causes our symptoms and treatment for every patient has to be individualized. Also, they are reluctant to prescribe narcs for pain, sleep meds, depression meds, meds with "off label" uses for fibro (like Lyrica and Neurontin) because they never intended that to be a part of their specialty practice when they became rheumatologists. We are way outside of their comfort zone, and difficult to treat.

The "old" types of arthritis, osteo and RA and lupus etc. with lab markers to "prove" the condition they are more familiar and comfortable with because they studied them more in med school and residency, and there are fewer and more specific medications to treat these symptoms, often leading to a better therapeutic result (that is, a result that can be measured.)

Lastly -- and this is just my opinion -- most of these rheumy's have HUGE egos -- God complexes even! And for some reason, many of them have the personalities and bedside manners of warthogs, and that is on a good day!

p.s. I've only ever been to one rheumy in my life, and it was such a miserable and degrading experience that I have NEVER wanted to see another one! If you have a great rheumy, then you are one of the lucky ones!

hipmama42,

This is why we can not give up. The more we push and show we are not going anywhere, then they will do more studys on fibro.

dragonfly, I totally agree with you! I think that perhaps another reason that the rheumys are frustrated with us and don't always want to work with us is that we ARE so informed about fibro and up on all of the latest studies that they often have not even bothered to read! We're more assertive and knowledgeable than other patients when it concerns our health and well-being, and we won't "just go away...."

I meant to add that I too have met with more success and willingness to try new and different treatment regimens with other types of doctors who are not as narrow-minded in their thinking as a lot of the rheumatologists would appear to be (as reported by many on this forum).

But we really need to get these rheumys in our corner too! I think it is going to be a process, but we will get there because we don't give up!

I quit going to my rheumy about 2 years ago because he charges about twice as much as my primary dr. and doesnt' do any more than the primare does. One day I went to see him and I had been in the exam room for about 45 minutes and I thought this is taking way too long, then I heard him telling the office staff by and that he would see them tomorrow, One of the ladies seen my chart hanging beside the door and reminded him i was there and waiting. He didn't appologize or anything, he just walked in the room and acted like I had just made him late for his golf game or whatever. Then he made remarks about how many meds. Ihad been on and asked what kind of meds. I wanted that day. I felt like a drug addict and that I was wasting both our times. So I just talked to my primary and we have handled it ever since. I had one rheumy tell me not to let the weather and pain affect the way I feel and function. DUH. I was so aggravated with her I never went back again. By the way, our town is small and we only have 1 rheumy so there is no choice unless you want to drive 30 minutes to an hour to see someone. Like I said, my primary seems to care more than anyone else I have seen.

Cheers to everyone who doesn't have to take meds. But as for me I don't know what I would do without them. I do not abuse them and take them as directed and they help me to function and make me easier to live with.

I have been taking Klonopin for about a 1 and a half years now.. I take .5mg in the morning, .5mg in the afternoon and 1mg at bedtime. It helps me with anxiety but doesn't help me sleep...Klonopin has been known to be a choice drug for drug abusers that might be why they act strange about it. It is an abused drug.... I work in a hospital and I can't stand when people are judged by the prescriptions they are given...
