Just wondering if anyone has heard of something called D-Ribose?? It is supposedly absolutely wonderful for helping with chronic fatigue and I guess it is an all-natural supplement.....just wondering if anyone has tried it and has had any success with it....otherwise What do ppl take here for energy with fibro, like anything that's dr persribed to help with the chronic fatigue?? My dad is 60 and he has fibro.....ye-ah. I got diagnosed first but now it's sure he's got it, crazy huh? Guess genetics do play a role sometime....but anyway he is really bad off with the chronic fatigue, he wants to work 2 more yrs before retiring, and I told him he Should get at least partial disability and then retire in 2yrs b/c he falls asleep at work and everything, and I'm scared he'll fall asleep in the car too, its just getting so difficult for him to work b/c of this damned fatigue.......Any input?? I know some ppl here have to work, right? How does everyone do it esp with the fatigue??

Thanks

Leelee,

Welcome to the group I have not worked in some time, so I can't really be of any assistance on that topic. All I know is this disease really sucks the life out of you.

Sorry I couldn't help you on that, but I sure someone here will be able to help you.

Leelee, I tried the D-ribose also and did not get any real benefit from it. It was also expensive. Maybe if I had taken it longer and in larger quantities, I might have seen some increase in my energy level, but since insurance does not cover it, I decided to go the prescription route, and discussed my chronic fatigue and fear of falling asleep while driving with my PMP. I also have adult ADD symptoms. I've tried both the Ritalin and the Adderall in small doses. So far the Adderall long acting form is working out fairly well for me. It keeps me from having to sleep all day long or take frequent naps, so that I can be a more involved parent with my two boys and partipate in more activities with them, as well as be safe driving them places. It definitely helps with alertness and somewhat with energy level, although when I am in a bad flare it does not always help much.

Provigil is another med used for narcolepsy, chronic fatigue and sleep disorders. This is the drug that my doctor preferred to use, but with no insurance it was going to cost me over $400/month -- way more than I could afford. Some people have had great success with this medication! I would try it if I could afford it!

I agree that your dad would probably have a sleep study done first to determine the possible causes of his daytime sleepiness and low energy. Sleep apnea can cause many of the symptoms, and can be significantly corrected with a CPAP machine so that you get more oxygen and a more restful night's sleep.

Good luck to your dad and keep us posted!

-Sherry

Also along with what amyjo was saying Provigil is also given for the same reasons.... but I take it to help with the fibro fog...... it is wonderful...It truely helps me think again...... I feel like I can concentrate again...... I use to just walk around the house wondering what I was walking around for...... now... I don't do that as much.... I remember from one room to the other..... ...

Thanks everyone for the input, I've heard of the things discussed, but hadn't even thought of a sleep study. I have a problem with fatigue too but since I don't work Outside the home (which is still work everyone!) I deal a little better most dys, most times I'm still really fatigued tho and low energy esp in a really bad flare. I just hate to ask for anything else to help me b/c I'm already on Koladapins for night and 25mg fentanyl, I hate to ask for something else to help me feel more alert but if my fatigue gets any worse I might have to. Do a lot of ppl with Fibro take something for chronic fatigue that always comes with it to some degree?? Just wondering.....I will definately tell my dad your guys' input tho and thanks for the advice, everyone!!

I have never tried it personally but I can tell you that without a doubt that since I started taking 5-HTP on March 4, 2008 I have been totally pain free. I was told by a research Physician from the National Fibromyalgia website that one of the big common factors in people with Fibromyalgia is that there body does not get enough real sleep and we suffer from a lack of seratonin. She explained it to me that when a person with Fibromyalgia goes to sleep at night we never actually go through all the stages of sleep and therefore our bodies do not produce the proper seratonin. Lack of seratonin can cause fatigue, generalized muscle pain throughout the body, dizziness, depression and generalized feeling like you just don't want to go on. All of this mess with our pain sensors and neurotransmitters in our brain. So I took a seratonin test to find out if I was low and I was dangerously low. So my next thought was how can I boost me seratonin level? I started researching what would bring up my seratonin level and the answer kept coming back to sleep. So I then started researching as to what would help me sleep and raise my seratonin level and there were two products. One was L-trytophan and the other was 5-HTP. The L-trytophan seemed to work but there are some minor side effects that I never experienced myself but I decided I wanted something that had no side effects. Then I started taking the 5-HTP and have been PAIN FREE! If I skip a day I really notice it and I do suffer so I make sure I take a 100mg capsule about 1 hour before bed and I sleep the night through and I do not wake in pain! So I think more people with Fibromyalgia should try this, if may no work for everyone but it is a better alternative to the antidepressants and pain meds! Also the 5-HTP works with the bodies own metabolism so you do not gain weight like when you take the meds the Doctors prescribe. Actually it will help you loose weight!
