Does anyone know what a low value on a blood test listed as IGF-I could mean? Thanks, Becca

No, I googled it, why did the dr order this lab for you? I saw it perhaps has something to do with metabolism, weight and growth.

He was an endocrinologist I saw a few weeks ago. He was checking my thyroid and ended up saying I have reactive hyopoglycemia but nothing else wrong. I then picked up a copy of the blood test results and noticed that this IGF-I was quite low.

Here is some information that I found on IGF-1:

"Action

.......IGF-1 is one of the most potent natural activators of the AKT signaling pathway, a stimulator of cell growth and multiplication and a potent inhibitor of programmed cell death.

Almost every cell in the human body is affected by IGF-1, especially cells in muscle, cartilage, bone, liver, kidney, nerves, skin, and lungs. In addition to the insulin-like effects, IGF-1 can also regulate cell growth and development, especially in nerve cells, as well as cellular DNA synthesis."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Insulin-like_growth_factor_1

There is more medical type information on the above website about IGF-I, but what I highlighed in orange is interesting to me because of our fibromyalgia. It would be fun to know how many of us have low IGF-I levels since it has such a big effect on muscles and nerves. I wonder if there are any studies on this???????

Yes, I have been reading as well. One study indicated that as many as 30% of those dx with FM have low IGF. In one study in Spain all FM people with low IGF responded well to injections of hormones. The researchers said they believe this is consistent with the studies suggesting that FM is caused by a disruption in the hypothalmus.. You cannot however determine if IGF is low without more extensive blood work. My indocrinologist completely ignored this low value of IGF and did no further testing. He must be an idiot..............the more I read the more I come to believe we ALL should have our IGF evaluated.....

Why doncha ask him the next time you see him? Give him the information that you've been reading and see what he says. I'd be interested to learn as well.

I do not plan on seeing him again. I see his partner a creepy rheumatologist now. He kind of pushed me off onto him when he discovered I might have FMS. The ol hot potato treatment! I have however contacted my neurologist at Hopkins to ask him about this but the guy is so busy that I do not know if he will get back to me or not. It seems if as many as 30% of us have low IGF then it should be significant. It is treated with growth hormone injections. I am not searching the net to see who gives these injections and are they safe.........
