Hi everyone,

I was just wondering if anyone had any advice, (negative or positive)information or ANY words on trigger point injections.

My old pain Doc used to give them to me but I moved across the state and now, I can't find a Doc that will do it! And, even if I did...are they bad for you? Okay for you? I know they sure feel good (once they're done with that needle) I mean...wouldn't ya think that moving from a tiny town in Eastern Washington to SEATTLE would be a step UP for finding a good pain Dr.? Just my luck, I tell ya!

Well, if anyone has anything I should know about these injections, I'd sure like to hear it. I'm looking hard to find a Doc that will give them, but wanna make sure they're not THAT bad for me...first!

Thanks in advance for your input!

When I lived in NW Indiana a Rheumatologist there gave me trigger point injections. I'm not a wimp when it comes to pain (you learn to tolerate it when you have Fibro) but those injections really hurt. The injection is a combination of novacaine (or another drug of the same kind) and a steroid like cortisone. I found a doctor in Omaha that will give them every 3 - 4 months. I get relief from them for about 2 weeks at the most. For me, the benefit wasn't worth the pain.

PS Too many steroids will eat holes in your bones.

My disabling chronic illness is more real than your imaginary medical expertise.

I have conflicting reports that they are effective & that they are not -

I think it depends on

1) why/where you are getting them

2) who is doing the work

3) can you spend the money on a better treatment option

I've had them & not been impressed with the result.

He injected me with Lidocaine & a "hint" of cortisone "to make it stick" - not a quack by the way, he's a mainstream pain management Dr.

Any benefit I did get was quickly gone.

how's the acupuncture doing?

Forms of cortisone injected into the soft tissues of the body are less likely to cause osteoporosis than that injected directly into joints as with intra-articular injections for joint pain. Even worse than both of those is taking Prednisone or other forms of cortisone orally. And a lot of times the benefits of the medication outweighs the risk of osteoporosis. I am on oral pred daily and have been for a bit over a year. My dose has been anywhere from 10-20 mg with a couple of bumps to 25 or 30. And I do have osteoporosis. But, I had it long before a drop of any form of cortisone entered my body. It showed on x-ray by 1989. I was 12 in 1989. So, I likely should not be on prednisone at all...but the benefits outweigh the risks a great deal.My rheumy wants me on the lowest dose possible but knows that since I cannot take NSAIDs, pred is what keeps me moving without as little stiffness as possible.

Now, about TPI...I want them. I've not had them. But, I want to try them as well as acupuncture! After my tattoo my lower back felt better. I've had multiple nerve blocks and am getting my 4th RFA in 2 weeks or so and love them. The amount of cortisone in TPIs is minimal compared to other forms of shots from my understanding. Cortisone is typically used in nerve blocks as well but my pain doc doesn't with me because of my daily intake of pred. He also did not use any during my RFA. So, some docs don't always use cortisone.

I hope you can find a doc to give you the TPIs Suzee. It's hard when we've found something that helps and then lose it.

Well, now that I've started the acupuncture, I don't think I'm going to be needing them. I mean...I feel SOO AWESOME TODAY!!! I can't even believe it. I woke up at 5:30 bright eyed and bushey tailed and ready to go! I didn't have to take a pain pill for TWO WHOLE HOURS when I usually go straight for the bottle as soon as I get up! (and THAT'S usually 7 or 8ish! So...today has been wonderful! I have energy and NO PAIN ANYWHERE AT ALL!!

I also started a new herb and some juice that is made of seaweed but tastes like mango/papaya. IT IS WONDERFUL! I've been on it for about 2 weeks and it detoxifies at first then...BOOOOOOM! Helps for everything! AND I MEAN EVERYTHING!!! If it's okay, I would like to give the name of the drink out because I can ALREADY feel the work it's doing!!! I want each of you to benefit from it if you desire to! I know...if you would like more info on any of the herbs I'm on or the drink...pm me and I'll tell you more! This stuff is great and my acupuncturist is AWESOME!! I LOVE HER!!!

FINALLY....a WONDERFUL DAY!!

{{{{hugs to everyone}}}}

My Orthopedic Surgeon does my trigger points....and it does help, but nothing like a Cortisone Epidural. I have one pain doc that I go to for my lumbar epidural and another that I go to for my cervial epidural.

Otherwise, I would only be able to have the cervical epi one month and then the lumbar epi the next - making me go a month after the epi wore off before I could do it again in that region of my spine.
