coffeebean....I think all kidney stones are painful, I am so glad you were able to pass yours, do you have them often?

About 15 yrs ago I started seeing a Top Dr. A VERY well respected kidney metabolic specialist in addtion to my regular Urologist/ surgeon.......... after lots tests they told me they my body produced calicum and it was Hereditary... Oh my god! I could have told him that! My father and 4 aunts and 3 uncles plus my grandmother All suffered with Kidney stones thier whole lives too..........

There really are no meds to help me with this, only to

" drink tons of water and not have any calcium, also eat a low protein diet"

Well ok.........but calcium and protein seem to help my Fibro and Lupus, so I am in one of those damned if you do damned if you don't situations.......

Basicaly I just do the best I can minute to minute juggling all my medical conditions.

I was told to drink lots of cranberry juice when I had kidney stones. I still do drink it and it seems to help.
I have dystonia, neuropathy, gerd, arthritis, and fibromyalgia, carpal tunnel and other ailments. I enjoy embroidery, music, and reading my Bible and Christian books. I love to bake. I try to be very supportive and positive.

I would not say I get them often but have had 4 in 6 years. No one in my family really has them, my Dad has had just one a very long time ago.

My doctor was talking about when the soon to be upcoming years hit and i have to take calcium supplements verses the kidney stones too.

I don't know if there is medication for every type of stones....but she said after they tested this one they would see what kind it was and that there was medication available to prevent...I guess certains types maybe. But yes lots of water too!

I don't really eat too many calcium related products, some though. When they determine this stone I guess I will try to do some type of adjusting to help prevent too many more if I can.

If sure is hard to deal with multiple medical problems, what helps one does not the other and vice versa.

I am glad that you have found an excellent doctor, that always helps!

Thanks for your help.

Sorry to just jump in, but I've had 4 kidney stones in 6 years. I was able to pass 3, but had lithotrypsy done with the last one. Did you you say that you were told to take calcium supplements or told not to? I was told to absolutley never take calcium, but that I should get plenty of it from natural sources (dairy, green leafies, etc.) Also, I was told to stay away from caffeine, and drink plenty of water. I've done that (although I thought I was going to die without my caffeine for about 2 months) for the past year and a half and haven't had one since. With your name Coffeebean, I'm guessing you do drink caffeine? The Doc. also said to drink a beer once in a while to flush out the kidneys. Not a prob. for me at all, as I enjoy beer.

Sorry it took me so long to repy, I have been busy and not on alot. I too have had 4 stones in 6 years. Sorry to hear you have had problems with them. Just the other day my doctor told me it was much more important to take the calcium supplements than worry about the stones. Now I am not old enough to have to take them yet but she said when it was time that I needed to take them, it was more important. I have never been told about caffeine at all, actually I have never heard that one myself. I try to cut back on it due to my acid reflux/Gerd. I have heard about drinking beer to help pass the stones as it flushes you out good. I try to drink as much water as possible but don't always do well on it. Hope you remain stoneless for along while!!!
