I was wondering about other people experience with gentle exercise like walking or swimming, and if it helped them or not.

I don't know for sure if I have fibro, as I haven't seen a specialist. But two doctors have told me I "probably" have fibro.

My pain is much more extreme and debilitating if I try to walk more than 2 blocks. For example, I walked about 3 blocks for 4 days in a row, but on the 5th day I such severe pain that I could barely walk through the house and I was laid up for 3 - 4 days. Is this typical with fibro? or does walking actually help? The kind of pain it cause is obviously nerve pain, not muscle or bone pain. I can tell because it is sharp shooting pain, along with neuropathy.

Shanti33,

Why don't you first find out if you have Fibromyalgia?

Everyone is different in what they can and cannot do.

I would first talk about it with your Doctor after you have a diagnosis.

Well, one doctor said that I do, and another said that I probably do. Both checked tender points. Getting a diagnosis for what is wrong with me is so much easier said than done. I've had countless tests, MRIs, EEG, EMG, Xrays, etc. With the coverage I have, I can't see a specialist. That is why I'm here to get some feedback on experiences.

Sorry, it's just that I had heard that exercise helps Fibromyalgia and that is one reason I am skeptical of my diagnosis. I'm frustrated that I can't exercise.

Shanti,

Yes, exercise is very important. It is hard, and it does hurt. The idea is to start out small, and do a little bit each day, until you can build it up to do more. If you just sit or lay around and don't move, you will get so stiff that you can't walk, like Adewyn was talking about. Don't overdo, but do what you can, as often as you can. HUGS

Please do not take anything I say as medical advice. I am not a doctor.

Shanti, exercise may help with Fibro, but it HURTS at first, and you have to build up slowly. Adewyn is about to start teaching Zumba classes, but it's taken her, I think she said, about 2 years to get to the point she could.

If I tried to walk 2 blocks and back, I'd have to take at least 2 or 3 rest breaks to do it. Just becuase you can't walk 3 blocks, or doing so lays you up with a Fibro Flare, doesn't mean that it can't be fibro because you can't exercise.

I was put on physical therapy and water therapy this winter. Every session with the PT made me hurt SO badly. The water I could do, 5 mins on an exercise bike had me hurting so much I could barely move. So I stopped doing PT and was only doing water therapy.

We hurt so much, we tend to sit around, or lay around, and try not to do anything that will make us hurt more. The problem with that is the muscles atrophy. Coming back from that, as Adewyn can tell you, I'm sure, is a long and very difficult process. Yes, walking is good for us. But sometimes you have to start with walking for one minute and very gradually increase it as your tolerance builds. Don't try to run a marathon the first day!

Thank you all for that advice. That does sound like me. I've been doing this for a couple of years. I try to walk and then I pay so much for it that I give up on it for long periods of time. Until I forget the pain. Then I try again and I get angry that I can't do it. So I think that I have really tailor this just right. Right now I'm trying this: Two blocks for two day, then rest one day. I'll see if that sends me into a flare. If so, then I'll adjust it again until I'm at a manageable routine. This is so encouraging to hear how you all have pushed through and it does get better with exercise eventually.

Very educational post everyone- great responses. The exercise I do get is typically "window shopping" - walking around the mall... we sometimes go out to the strip - but that walking is rediculously debilitating- not being able to walk in the house is disheartening... every step is agony- I have noticed for me- it doesn't matter if I'm wearing heels or flats or tennis shoes- the pain is all the same- so at least I get to still wear my heels! : ) I know I really need to get on a more regular exercise plan- and when I do - I will start slowly, like has been suggested here. I'm annoying about pushing myself to do a lot when I am not as sore... and paying for it later!! Hope everyone is doing great!
