Hi all,

I belong to a local fibro support group and we have a group on yahoo. The leader posted this article. Unfortunately I don't know where it came from, but let me know if it makes you as angry as it made me! Here goes...

Complaints of chronic pain appear to have created a disease

WASHINGTON--While Pfizer is celebrating the approval of Lyrica as treatment for fibromyalgia, the medical profession has expressed its misgivings about the unhealthy relationship which has arisen between

the Food and Drug Administration and the pharmaceutical industry.

Many doctors are now complaining that the FDA has bowed to the interests of the latter by relaxing its criteria for defining what is a disease, allowing almost any affliction the status of "treatable

disease" and thereby opening up new business avenues for the industry. "Chronic pain from chronic complainers" is how one doctor put it when

asked to qualify the status of fibromyalgia in the eyes of many healthcare professionals. There are no biological tests to diagnose the disease, no environmental factors to identify, and nothing more

than patient input to go by.

But Pfizer, followed by Eli Lilly and Forest Laboratories, has successfully lobbied the FDA into recognizing fibromyalgia as a disease, although there is no consensus in the medical profession

regarding diagnosis.

Instead, the pharmaceutical industry has been able to push ahead and find one more product to market to a sector of the population that is convinced it has this disease, while many doctors simply write off

the chronic pain as nothing more than the consequences of a stressful lifestyle.

I'll tell ya what, this article brings out the

in me lol

It angers me to thing that some think that we are chronic complainers. Obviously we have something in common, which unfortunately is the pain. You can't tell me that surgical pain is always treated the same way, so why would FM? Each person is unique...it is the way we were made! It's no wonder that while there are similarities to this condition, there are also differences. Sometimes I just wanna shake those dudes that think they know it all. Maybe they should try walking a mile in our shoes for once.

Oh Lovely, just because they can't feel it it isn't real. That's just what I want to hear to make me feel better. Well I'll tell you, I've tried for a long time to convince myself that it isn't real. All that got me is a lot of pain and grief and just about losing the ability to walk. I can't go far without support, and even with help it hurts more than I can describe.

I'm really ticked that someone would be arrogant enough to say my pain, or your's isn't real, doesn't exist. I think it's more likely that thier preciose egos are bruised because they can't solve the problem and save the day.

Of course denying the existance of something is much easier than doing the research needed to find a cause and develop a treatment. God forbid they spend more money on chronic disabaling pain than they do on studies on how fast katsup moves.

I'm sorry if I'm ranting but my GOD this irks me!

*fuming*

Why would ANYONE complain about pain if there was none?

Why would ANYONE make up pain if there was none?

Why would Anyone pretend to have an illness if they don't?

I will never understand why people doubt this illness, just because they can't see it.

I like to tell people its kinda like believing in God...you can believe in him, without seeing him.

Indeed Your'e right. Oh yes I love missing out on life. I love missing out on get-togethers with family and friends. I love missing out on going fishing. I love missing out on riding my motorcycle, especially when its a glorious day. I love missing out on just being out and about. I love missing out on working and inter-acting with other people.

Yup, I love being stuck at home missing out on life.

But, what I love the most is being told that it's all in my head, and need to get out more. Yes I do need to get out more, so move over cause if I do get rid of this illness Im going to plow right over you just to try to enjoy life again. Sorry for venting but you are so right.

AAARRRRRRRGGGGGGGG!!!!! This is so freakishly infuriating. "Cronic complainers" it took me months of serious pain to finally fess up to my parents that i wasn't well. Throughout this whole thing I dont tell people how I feel or what pain I'm in because I dont like to complain. You have to pry an answer out of me if you askhow I am. GGGRRRRRR. I am going to find whoever wrote this article and give them a piece of my mind! And then I am going to write a wickedly awesome strong response essay and have it published somewhere for all of those idiots out there to see!!!

Well, aside from that i definitely agree that the aliens should come and get them....or maybe they should come and get us so we can have a fibro family reunion and possible get help from a species that cares! Plus I'm sure being in zero gravity would feel great!!!

Lots of love,

soopergirl
