So yesterday I was hurting so bad in my back and shoulders, and the percocet only worked for a few very short hours...I decided to try the samples of the lidoderm patches my primary gave me. I had a script from my rheumy but with so many wasted copays from taking just a pill or two just to find it didn't work or made me wacked out of my mind, I'm really leary of trying anything without a sample first.

Somehow I got one on my lower back without help and then cut the other in two to have them on my shoulder blads. Not perfect, but I thought it would at least help a little if it worked.Within a half hour it burned and itched beyond belief. My husband has no more student by 2 and is out of the building by 2:30. I was counting the minutes until he could get home to help me get them off! Called him at 2:25 to make sure he was coming right home because I needed him so badly. By the time he got home, I was lightheaded, really really dizzy and had a headache working. Wouldn't you know, those are possible reactions to these stupid patches! And they didn't even do anything for me with the pain!

I'm getting really frustrated that I'm still stuck with only percocet for the pain. And I'm always feeling like i'm in a flare, so I can't skip it. Keep your fingers crossed that once I can exercise in a pool and work on the cognitive behavioral therapy my rheumy suggested I find some relief in other ways!

I'm sorry to hear that. Those patches are very expensive even with my insurance, but they work well for specific areas like the bottom of my feet or my elbow that I can't bend cause of the pain.

At least you have Percocet. The best I've been able to get is Vicodin.

It is so scary to have an allergic reaction to meds. I had a seizure after taking Voltarin and anti-inflammatory drug.

Why do you think we are so sensitive to meds or have unusual reactions to combinations of meds? I never had anything like that happen before FM.

My psych either didn't give me an explanation as to why we're sensative, or my wonderfully impaired fibro memory forgot what it was!1

I just came across your talk of sensitivity to meds. I am right there with you- I know that the Percocet is the ONLY thing that actually works to at least calm my pain- with no issues. I took Lyrica it was aweful. (some people it has helped which is great but not for me) I had terrible hallucinations which I dont remember but my husband asked me about the next morning. He asked me if I was ok I-only way I knew something had happened was eyes were so swolen from crying. He was so scared. Right after Lyrica I collapsed at home- with no recollection- my oldest son called 911 I only remember waking up at hosp- lady screaming at me did I try to kill myself- I was histarical- I had bruises all over my chest whatever they do to wake you up is horrible. Sorry to go on and on Im sorry this happened to you guys also-but its nice to be able to talk to others who truly know what your going thru- and to top off the rest- tried Ultram- which by the way no help- terrible allergic reaction itched all over wanted to scream- finally 2 days later- its getting out of my system. Oh my ive talked so much sorry!
Trying to find comfort in all this...

Don't apologize!! I get frustrated so it's great to hear that someone else can take only percocet...then I won't feel like people think I'm making it up. I mean, it does sound kind of riduculous if you think about it...a narcotic!! being the only meds I can tolerate?!? So funny I almost forgot to laugh!

You are totally NOT making it up- I feel the same exact way. I tell the doctor he doesnt even like to give me the percocet but Im like look when Im desperate and need relief thats all I can take. He gave me Vicodin one time not too long back- they are similar but NOT the same(as im sure you know also) they made me sick as a dog to my stomach. Ive been thru so many copays. I could have gotten so many massages for all the money ive spent. My doctor will only give me a small amount each month of percocet. I said look I dont care if its 20 I will make them last. Says they are awful doesnt want addiction problems. Ive done reading on every medicine Ive taken- every one has had issues with addiction I said if im going to hurt like this forever damn it I need something for when I feel like im going nuts. Lyrica- addictive- Ambien - addictive- what is the difference??? When I need to go somewhere with my kids and not feel like Im 95 (no offense to anyone please) I cant cope! So I swear I keep them like gold. Doc tried to tell me about addiction levels of medicines. I said look if you ever get fibro and I pray you never do- let me know how much you give a rats behind about addiction LEVELS! I know how I feel. If the others would work that would be GREAT! Id take them!
Trying to find comfort in all this...

Oh yeah I forgot about the med that gave me hallucinations. Amitryptiline. I had been taking Nortryptiline and when I moved I went to see a new doctor to get a refill. He gave me Amitryptiline by mistake and I noticed that the pill was different shape and color - but sometimes they do that to you - I was stupid and took it anyway. OMG! Terrible hallucinations all night long.

I've been really, really lucky in that my phys asst and old rheumy ordered them for every 6 hours (4 pills per day) for a whole month. I have had extra every month so far, but I get a new script when the month is up anyway in case I get to the point where I have to follow the script to the letter. I have had many days these past two weeks when I had to take the whole's day's worth as ordered.

Why do we have to fight with our doctors about pain meds when we have debilitating chronic pain every day?

I found this info.

Pain Management: Drug Tolerance and Addiction

Some medications used to treat pain can be addictive. Addiction is different from physical dependence or tolerance, however. In cases of physical dependence, withdrawal symptoms occur when a substance suddenly is stopped. Tolerance occurs when the initial dose of a substance loses its effectiveness over time. Addiction and physical dependence often occur together.

People who take a class of drugs called opioids for a long period of time may develop tolerance and even physical dependence. This does not mean, however, that a person is addicted. In general, the chance of addiction is very small when narcotics are used under proper medical supervision.

Addictive Pain Medications

Opioids, a family of drugs that have effects similar to those of opium or morphine, can be addictive. They include:

* Codeine

* Oxycodone (including brand name OxyContin)

* Morphine (including brand name MS Contin)

* Meperidine (including brand name Demerol)

* Hydrocodone (including brand name Vicodin)

Who Is at Risk for Addiction?

Most people who take their pain medicine as directed by their doctor do not become addicted, even if they take the medicine for a long time. However, some people may be at a higher risk of becoming addicted than others. People who have been addicted to substances in the past or those with a family member(s) who are or have been addicted to drugs or alcohol may be at increased risk of becoming addicted to narcotics.

How to Prevent Addiction

The key to avoiding addiction is to take your medicine exactly as your doctor prescribes.

Share with your doctor any personal and/or family history of substance abuse or addiction. Your doctor needs this information to prescribe the medicines that will work best for you. Any fears about addiction should not prevent you from using narcotics to effectively relieve your pain.

Remember, it is common for people to develop a tolerance to their pain medication and to need higher doses to achieve the same level of pain relief. Such a situation is normal and is not a sign of addiction. However, you should talk to your doctor if this effect becomes troubling.

Jeerie,

I might have a suggestion of something that will help with your neck/shoulder pain.

My first appt. with my Rhuemy he gave me a shot of Lidocane on either side of the base of my neck . That was back in May and wow, immediate relief across my shoulders but ...

I think what makes my shoulders hurt is that the base of my neck swells and pains and I tense up. He says I have arthritis in the base of my neck where it connects to my spine. Ouch ...no wonder it hurts so bad !!!

At my last Rhuemy appt. I mentioned this to him... He gave me a (large tube) free sample of Voltaren Gel ( linament for muscles). If I like it, he will write a 'script for me when it is gone.

Voltaren WORKS great !!! Smells good and noone will ever know you re using it. The pamphlet says to only use 2 GRAMS (not ounces) per application. I have used it 3X in 3 weeks and get relief every time. I have no idea what it will cost by 'script so I am using this tube sparingly but it DOES WORK for me.

It s worth talking to your dr. about as well as trying if he is aware that it is out there.
