Who's tried Lyrica & what do you think about it's effectiveness?

I'm getting PM's asking questions about Lyrica that I can't fully answer because I've no first hand experience with it.

My sense for previous posts I read here is that it has some benefit for some people.

Which is to say that some of us can't tolerate the side effects including weight gain & some of us can tolerate the side effects but get limited relief & for some it gives significant relief but does not make the totally pain free. I don't think I've seen any posts that say it makes them totally pain or fatigue free.

If it does work for you & had reduced your pain please put a number on it (before my pain was a x & with Lyrica it's usually now a y)

The same with fatigue:

f it does work for you & had reduced your fatigue please put a number on it (before my fatigue was a x & with Lyrica it's usually now a y)

If you use it now, or have used it in the past please weigh in again so the information is in a common thread.

I've been on Lyrica for about 3 months. My nerve pain in my leg & foot has went from 8 or 9 to a 1 or 2. My back pain has remained steady at a 8, didn't seem to help at all. My fatigue has also remained the same at a 8 or 9. I'm taking 150mg morning and night. I have gain about 10 lbs since being on Lyrica. I will continue to take it for the leg & foot pain b/c nothing else has seemed to help it. I would recommend it for those suffering from nerve pain.

Ok I've been on the Lyrica a little over a mont now. We started very low at 50mg twice a day. at that time I was going through a major flare. When asked on a scale of 1-10 what was my pain level i said a 15. I was alaso taking my pain meds twice a day at that time which would bring me down to a 12. Since starting I have not taking a pain pill at all. My "heavy" deep burning pain in my upper back, shoulders and arms went down to about a 2-3. For the first time in 6 years I didn't feel I was carring the world on my shoulders. I started getting feeling in my feet that I didn't even know I lost. I have ad a decrease in the numbness and tingling in my hands. We just increased my dose to 75mg twice a day about 1 week ago.I don't if all the good is going to last or not but at this point if anyone tried to take my Lyrica away they would face bodily harm haha.

As for fatigue for me that's hard to say due to my work situation.

Hope this helps

Karen

Just wanted to post to say the Dove's original question remined me that I really should give it a try as well.

Just got a prescription wired to the pharmacy anthough it may that a few days to fill it (special order).

As it's not a "formulary" drug for my HMO I actually had to go through 2 courses of Nurontien & one of Nortryptaline before they'd pop for it.

I started taking lyrica about 1 month ago..I started with 50mg 2X a day then went to 50 mg 3x a day, now I am starting 75mg 3x a day...I really like it..I find that I do not have pain as long as I take it 3X a day, if I miss a dose the pain does come back..so I try not to miss a dose...The most important postitive effect is that I am making it through the day without taking a nap...

I am so bad at assigning numbers, but here it goes...my pain was around a 6, now no pain aslong as I take the pill 3X a day...fatigue was over a 10 before, now 1 as long as I take the pill 3X a day...hope that this helps...

my take on lyrica, love the stuff, the just is still out of the side effects, i can't put my finger on it, so no bother.

chemically, i think the most simple answer is that it tells the part of your brain that makes us hurt, to shut up... without making us feel stoned, or goofy... both being good feelings, but not in a medicine you have to take all the time.

I am probably wrong on the chemical thing, but that is what was summarized to me.

It works similarly to Neurontin is about the extent of my what Lyrica does chemically knowledge without going and digging it all up...which if Bruce doesn't have it at hand I will do, just not tonight!

Lyrica was what my pain doc first gave me in 2006 for fibro. Well a mix of it Lortab and Zanaflex and we knew from the past that Lortab and Zanaflex helped my fibro and other pain issues, just not enough. SO he said let's try Lyrica. Within 2 weeks on that combo, I felt well enough to take a trip from SC to Indiana. I learned on that trip how well it worked on the "don't touch my skin no matter how gently you try" pain. I was only a few hours past my normal dose time but couldn't get to my meds at the time and my son brushed against me and I almost screamed. Needless to say, I called for a rest stop to take meds. Within an hour, that pain was lower. It's never fully gone. I hate trying to rate my pain (grow up with pain and it's too normal and so very hard to give it a number) but since my pain doc uses that as a measure, I learned that when I first started seeing the doctor, my pain was at a consistent 7/8. Withing a few months on that mix of meds and with a nerve block to 3 of my rt lumbar facet joints, I was at a 3/4 most of the time. I'm generally a 4/5 now. Although my ins. did not cover Lyrica so we switched me to Neurontin. I just have to take 1800 mg of it daily vs 150 or 300 mg of Lyrica.

Lyrica was great for me for a while. My pain and fatigue were both at a 10 before I took Lyrica, then it went down to about a 6. Unfortunately, I gained weight while taking it. Since I am already in double digits with my dress size, I couldn't stand seeing the numbers going up and up. My family weren't very supportive with all of the meds I was taking either. I was not only on Lyrica, I was on Wellbuturin, Trazadone, Cymbalta, and Tramadol all at the same time. When they discovered that I had Lupus as well, I quit taking everything. I'm not sure that was the best decision at the time, but now I have a whole new cocktail of meds to take and the pain is just as intense 9-10 most days, but I've lost weight and the meds for the Lupus help with the fatigue a lot.
