The cause of fibromyalgia is not yet known.

However, various triggering events are thought to precipitate its onset. A few examples would be an infection (viral or bacterial), an automobile accident, an injury, surgery, or the development of another disorder, such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, or hypothyroidism. These triggering events probably do not cause fibromyalgia, but rather, they may awaken an underlying physiological abnormality that is already present. In addition, several research studies are ongoing to determine the genetic (or inheritable) component of fibromyalgia.

I found this interesting and thought it would be good to see what everyone thought.

Interesting, but I don't believe any of the examples mentioned apply to the onset of my symptoms. The only possibility is RA, because I have a slightly high rheumatoid factor, but I haven't received that diagnosis. I guess only time will tell.

I Din't realize that hypothyroidism played any part in fibromyalgia. I was diagnosed with both at the same time. My thyroid levels had been out of range 1 year prior to that, but my doctor said we could deal with it at another time. When I was dx in October at UMD, and he still refused to treat me --I changed doctors. I am being treated now with Synthroid.

Sometimes Fibromyalgia is confused with hypo and hyperthyroidism as both have muscle and joint pain, the pain usually goes away when you become euthyroid.I don't know which event to pick as the trigger for my fibro, was it the death of my father, menopause, moving interstate,an extremly bad viral infection,or the Hashimotos disease maybe it was the whole lot put together,I'd really love to know.

When I was dx d with hypothyroidism, it was because I had complained to GP about being extremely tired ALL THE TIME. (I had kept regular appts. and check ups with OB-GYN but he never ordered blood work unless I was to have some type of surgery .)

I was on ever-changing dosages of Synthroid for nearly a year and half before GP finally referred me to Neuro. I think I may have had Fibro for several years before they even gave it a name but my non-functioning thyroid aggravated my condition and Hypo and Fibro elevated to the stage I am at now.

IF I could blame a trauma in my life for the shock to my system it would run clear back to '97-'98 when, between DH and myself, we lost 3 siblings between us (2 totally unexpected and the third sooner than expected).

Talk about inner pain and turmoil ...BIL in Nov. due to lung cancer; SIL in Dec. due to emphysema and SIL in Jan. due to heart condition she wasn t aware of.

So, yes, I truly believe trauma could send one into Fibro.

I also believe that trauma can cause fibro as I was injured by a woman who physically hit me with her fist in between my shoulder blades. At first I thought it would just take a few days to heal, but 17yrs later I am still waiting for the pain to go away.

The main thing I can't understand is if there is something physiological underlying, why can't tests find it? Also, why does the fatigue have to make itself so present in my life? I am fortunate enough to be home with the kids but don't have the luxury of taking naps when they are home for the summer. Don't take me wrong, I LOVE my girls!! I just need a nap once in a while - even for an hour would be great! Thankfully my family is understanding when I say I can't do certain things cuz of the pain.

I am glad that research continues on fibro ~ means that it really does exist and the exposure of it will continue! There is hope for all of us!

Warm, gentle hugs to all & wishes for a pain-free day!

Well I at the time, was in a very bad (abusive) relationship, hernia surgery, hypo, and viral infection all at the same time. I was told by one doc that it could have been a chemical that triggered it when they put me under for surgery. I know I saw a lot of discussion and videos on youtube, doctors stating its actually hypothyroid that is causing this but I have a sister whose thyroid doesn't work at all and she doesn't have fibro. But all the research I do, I have come across a lot of things they claim maybe linked to fibro like toxicity from chemicals and heavy metals. also under lining conditions like, lyme disease and microchondrial, etc...(the list goes on). I am not quite sure what to think at this point other then it is some kind of imbalance whether it was from trauma or chemical, or toxins. I notice that when I am doing research on Autism for my daughter that Fibromyalgia comes up every time when it comes to underlining causes and so does parkinsons and alziehmers. (excuse the misspelling lol)

I lost my oldest son, he was only 19, to Leukemia. I was so wasted depressed and traumatized, then I was attacked during this time and received a neck injury (3 herniated discs) Noticed a difference (as much as I could notice a difference) the day after the attack.

That was 6 years ago, and it started with my knee giving out for no reason, then the fatigue and Leg Cramps set in and it's been going down hill ever since.

Here's a twist, I just recently went to a natural holistic MD who ordered blood testing (not come back yet)and is 99% sure that my adrenals have been depleted and #2 toxins and thyroid.
