I wanted to ask y'all about your success/failure with non-prescription treatments for fibro. I've sent PMs to a couple of you, but I would really value hearing the experiences of anyone who is willing to share. I am someone who is VERY medication sensitive; I have a 2-page list of prescriptions I can't tolerate. I am currently working with a combination of a homeopathic chiropractor, neuro, PCP, and therapist. The supplements I use, I've had to research and locate on my own. If you have something that works (or that really doesn't), I would love to hear about it so I could add it to the ongoing discussion with my medical "team" (I make sure they approve of all the supplements I add in to my treatment). So, here's what I'm working with:

Prescriptions:

Pediatric doses of Keppra

Fioricet

Frova

Supplements and alternates:

Laser accupuncture (seems to be moderatly beneficial)

5-HTP (used as a natural anti-depressant)

Valerian (anti-anxiety and sleep aid)

Melatonin (sleep aid)

Digestive enzymes (necessary to keep the Keppra from destroying my stomach)

Thank you in advance for your thoughts and commentary

I am also sensitive to medication so I have tried everything and now have medication that doesn't get rid of the pain but makes it tolerable. I tried the 5-HTP after hearing about it on this website. Quess what? My body couldn't and my family couldn't deal with the side effects from this. So I am not taking that.

I do take the mealtonin and 5-HTP and I sleep a lot better at night. I was given a RX sleep aid and it didn't help me at all.

I tried valerian a long time ago. I belched it so bad I gave up on it.

Hi there,

If you go to my profile (Puddles) and you scroll down to my discussion of June 13th, you will see that I posted ALL of the supplements that I am taking! What a difference it has made in my life. I am actually getting my life back!! For me, supplements are the ONLY way to go and the only thing that has worked. I can get thru my day practly PAIN FREE...and NO fibro fog anymore!!

I haven't been able to work for 18 months and starting tomorrow, I have taken on a part-time job!!! Only 15 hours a week, but it is a great start!!

I wish you well with the supplements and if you ever want to PM me, please feel free anytime!!

Gentle hugs always,

Puddles

I was wondering...how much more of the Vit. D and Magnesium are you adding? My multi - vitamin... has the vitamin D (I take 3 x a day) at 400 IU and the magnesium at 125 mg.

wow...really? How many iu of vit. D? Is that the 400 iu? I always hear that we are all very deficient in Vit. D. Especially, where I live...Western WA.

Yes, it is 400 iu. I also go to a tanning salon 2 to 3 times a week. It is very relaxing on my muscles and i get the benefit of a great tan too!! We get a lot of sun here in Alberta, Canada during the summer, but sometimes it is just way too hot to be outside. A little bit of real sun always makes me feel better. i also use our hot tub every night before bed and that really helps with the muscles and joints!! Hope this helps you out like it did me!!

Puddles is each magnesium tablet 250 mg. I take 2 Slo-Mags in the morning, but they are only 128 mg of 4 magnesium plus they have calcium. When do you take them? Thanks for the info.

Yes they are and I spread all my supplements between breakfast, lunch, supper and bedtime. I take the whey protien drink with breakfast. Lots of supplements thru the day, but they are TOTALLY worth it!!
