MDJunction to me

"When I first came to MDJ, I was in a very dark place, and feeling quite alone, I don't know how I found this site, but I have been very grateful ever since, all of you have offered insight to the illness of Bipolar and the other things going on with me, being here has allowed me to find friends, and to feel safe in discussing things that I would never have shared before.

I believe it has also offered me the chance to reach out and help others. A simple Thank you, is all that I have to offer, to this site and to the wonderful people here.

Does anyone know where I could go to like a site or books you could order that would have water exercises you can do in a swimming pool?

Thanks for any input!

Denise

Hmmmm, this is a tough-y question for me, Denise, but I m betting someone else here will be able to help you.

You might also check with your local (if you have one) Fibro Support Group (local hospital etc.)or again, ask your dr. to recommend books (if there are such books).

Hi Denise: Try checking out the Physical Therapy Departments of "large hospitals". Many of them have warm water therapy pools. However, they will require that you have a written order for PT from your doctor. So, asking your doctor is always a good place to start. If that is not possible, try local Community Colleges, they usually have warm water pools and offer arthritis swim classes which are open to anyone at a reasonable fee. One last place to check would be to call a local Arthritis Support Group and ask them where they have water exercise classes.

Water exercise is good for Fibromyalgia patients, because there is less strain and resistance on your joints and muscles during exercise. This is the type of water exercise that my doctor recommended for me. That being said.... I really want to caution you, it can be deceiving. It seems so easy, that you feel like you can do more. I only made it through one class, I was the youngest person in the class (and used to be athletic), so in my head, I thought "I can do this, I can’t be showed up by all the older people", when the class was over, I could barely get out of the pool and walk back to the dressing room.

It sounds funny now, but it was scary, my legs were shaking so bad that I couldn’t stand and I was too embarrassed to ask for help. I ended up in a lot of pain and in bed for a week recovering. So like any exercise, start slow and work your way up, even if you think it seems easy. Good luck to you, let us know how it goes.

Thank you alaskawannabe for your post. My doctor did give me a script for PT. I went for the appt and was so excited about going until they called me back later and to make sure that i knew how high my copay was before they signed me up for the classes. After hearing that and not realizing how high it was i thought that maybe i could do it at home in my own pool. Its just i have no idea what i am suppose to do. I will check out the Arthritis Support Groups in my area and see what they have hadn't thought about that. I have looked for Fibro support groups in my area but there doesn't seem to be any. Thanks also for let me know about how you pushed yourself that sounds like something I would do. Sometimes I think we just have in the back of our minds that we want it to go away so bad that we push to try to get rid of it. Thanks again for all your help!

I go to the YMCA for water exercises. I also will be starting back to water PT. The only difference is that at PT I do strength exercises for my arms.

I called the Holiday Inn here and they said that if someone wants to swim there it would be $5 for the day. Maybe all Holiday Inns are $5.00

Just a little warning --- I know everyone is totally different and I have sciatic along with my fibro and other back problems, but I went twice of water therapy both times without success, rather more and longer lasting pain. I went to one PT place last summer, and she had me do so many exercises, some of which were more harmful than helpful. The residual pain lasted for many months. Then this summer, I tried once again, in another facility, with a big warning to the PT that I can't over do it, swim therapy has hurt me before, ladidah. Well, I went for at least 3 or 4 times, and by the last time, I had overdone my exercises, and doing some exercises that were totally impossible for me to even do so I eliminated those on my own. She was so confused when I told the therapist that I was doing way too much and suffering from needless pain. So that was it, and I will never go for PT again in the pool. However, now I know the exercises that can help me, and I only do them if I can do them while I am in no pain. As soon as I feel pain, I just stop.

Now I do more walking than any other exercise and I do stretch as often as I can. I have to admit also that I have plantar fasciitis in my right foot, and that pain is probably the most severe pain I have ever had in my lifetime. Any just wanted to warn you guys, just in case...............but good luck with your individual physical therapy.
