It was suggested to me that I have fibromyalgia by an orthopedic and a family doctor in 2004. I was then diagnosed by Sunrise Medical Group but the neurologist had no bedside manner and I just hated going. I then received several sessions of epidurals and nerve blocks from a pain management doctor, which helped for about 2 years. Unfortunately, my insurance has changed and I can no longer afford the treatments. I have not had any luck with medications other than narcotics and anti-inflammatories. I'm sure I don't have to tell you the negatives of extended use of either of those. My pain level was steadily increasing as were my migraines and night leg irritations. They seem to have maintained for a little while now with a vitamin drink, but I'm afraid that wont last. I don't have a desire to nor can I afford to see a bunch of doctors again. I'm just at a loss of what to do now.

Anyone know a good doctor in Davie?

Welcome to the group. Have you tried Lyrica? It helps to relieve my pain significantly, but I've heard results vary. I hope you find a good doctor. My experience is a Rheumatologist is best.

I do not have FMS myself, but my best friend does and I am her "caretaker" to a point. Her experience with rheumatologists and so-called FMS specialists has been similar -- BAD. TO find her a doctor, I actually called the local hospitals and looked online for a somewhat local support group for FMS (usually lumped together with CFS) and they referred her to a doctor who has been a God Send. Also, she goes to a pin management clinic but has come up against the same things you did. She cannot take anything Anti-epilectic (neurontin, lyrica, topamax, etc) and if you have any sort of depression, call the company to discuss it before you start one. I also suffer from chronic pain and Neurontin sent my depression off the charts. Up to 25% of people had that problem according to Pfizer not the lower statistics that my doctor told me. They are VERY honest and a great resource. She also has a vitamin regimin (that she jokes is like her diet because she is always full of pills). Malic Acid and Magnesium helped her legs a lot and also Acidophilus (Floragen) daily helps by keeping any excess fluid from being retained and adding to her pain. Pain meds help a little, muscle relaxants help some, but it was antianxiety medication (lorazapam) that is the only thing that has truly helped her calm the nerves. Also, there are lidocaine patches (Lidoderm) that you can put on where the nerves seem the worst (she puts them on her thighs and they help her entire leg, but they are VERY expensive if your insurance does not cover them. So, she now uses a lidocaine ointment that I put on her legs and feet twice daily that helps significantly and it is not overly expensive, works right where you put it, and most insurance covers it.

I hope this helps a little. If I can help more or anything, please let me know. I have read seemingly every book on FMS I can get my hands on, met with nutritionists for her, interviewed countless doctors, etc. (She has the "brain fog" that is commonly associated with FMS.)

Take care!

Kelly

In the last 2 years I was able to lose 30 pounds. I had a tummy tuck done to deal ith the extra skin so I do not want to put the weight back on and I heard that Lyrica does that. I do not work full time anymore and our insurance has drastically changed and barely pays for anything anymore. My husband had a heart attack last year and e haven't finished paying the bills. Things are just tough right now!

Yes, weight gain is a downside of taking Lyrica and I can personally attest that it is true...I've gained approximately 20 pounds so far. UGH! (I've also struggled with my weight for years.) I just decided I'd rather be fat than in pain for the moment. If I gain much more, I might have to rethink that.

Welcome to all the new people I see here, KSajdak Sorry to hear about your husbands heart attack hope things are looking up at leasy with that.I completely understand tough times. I haven't worked since November 2007 and my dh is having some difficulty with his work visa so he can't work right now either. Fortunately I qualify for state medical in my state, so my meds nd doctors are covered. Does your insurance cover pain clinics? If so that is one option you could use. I know the side effects of long term narcotic use are bad, but if that is the only thing you can use for the pain it may be worth it.
May the sun bring you new energies by day,
May the moon softly restore you by night ,
May the rain wash away any worries you may have,
And the breeze blow new strength into your being,
And then, all the days of your life,
May you walk gently through the world, and know it’s beauty and yours.
A Native American Blessing
