Well, I had a bad first experience with the sleep study at the lab because I could not fall asleep, no matter what! My major problem is that I can't easily fall asleep and I sometimes toss and turn for hours before drifting off as well as staying asleep and waking up not feeling refreshed. I wondered how they expected me to fall asleep in a strange room, all hooked up with uncomfortable electrodes attached to my face, scalp and arms and legs, without drugging me up first. I was miserable and so uncomfortable in that bed, all wired up like that, and I turned onto my side to try to find a more comfortable position (like I normally sleep in the semi fetal position)and in doing that, ripped off my wires that were attached to my legs. The tech came running in to see why she wasn't get a reading, and scolded me for turning over on my side. She told me that all of the OTHER patients in the lab that night were already asleep, and that I had better hurry up and sleep so they could run the tests for the necessary 5 hour minimum. This only put more pressure on me! I got so anxious that I couldn't relax, and started to have a panic attack in strange dark room all by myself. I had taken my evening dose of Flexeril, but it didn't make me in the least drowsy. Finally the deadline was fast approaching and I asked the tech (finding the call button in the dark) to please unattach me from the machine and let me go home. I salute people who can fall asleep in these lab situations all wired up like lab monkeys without heavy duty sleep meds. I think I'd need a tranquilizer from a dart gun like they use on large wild animals on jungle safaris to knock me out....or perhaps a major anesthetic like they use in surgery.

My doc has not pushed me to try this again because we don't think I have sleep apnea, and I've found something to help me sleep well...at least for now....Zanaflex 8 mg 1/2 hour before bedtime. It's a muscle relaxant and not a benzo or addictive, but I don't take it during the day because it makes me too drowsy.
