Hi, I have not posted in a while because I have not had a whole lot to say. Basically since I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia 3 years ago my life has been non-existent! I would hurt so bad that I just could not get out of bed, I paid no attention to my family and they all suffered, I gained a tremendous amount of weight which made me feel ugly and repulsive. I complained all the time that I hurt or I was tired. I have had 3 different Physicians who have tried to treat me for the Fibromylagia and non of them where successful! In fact the last Physician had put me on Cymbalta and I almost commited suicide! Then I decided to take matters in my own hands! I had read an interesting article on the National Fibromyalgia website about Fibromyalgia and diet. So I wanted to learn more and I emailed the woman that wrote the article, her name is Colleen Brown. I explained to her what I was going through and asked for help!!! She emailed me back and she told me a very interesting story based on clinical studies. As a person with Fibromylagia we have problems sleeping and when you have problems sleeping your body never goes through all the stages of sleep that you need. When this happens your body produces little to no Seratonin, this will cause problems with metabolism and weight loss and also will cause your body pain! So I decided to start researching Seratonin and what I could do to help my body produce it? I found there are two supplements on the market that are safe for helping you get restrorative sleep, one is L-trytophan and the other is 5-HTP. You can obtain either one of these supplements from a health food store. I started by first of all getting off of the antidepressents, I felt the only thing that was making me depressed was hurting and if I could stop the pain then I no longer needed the antidepressents. I started taking 2 of the L-Trytophan every night 30 minutes before bedtime and to my good fortune I was falling asleep and waking every morning with no pain! I have been able to exercise on a daily basis and have returned to being myself the way I was before I was afflicted with Fibromyalgia! I have not tried the 5-htp as of yet but everything I have read about it, it is recommended for people with Fibromyalgia and depression. I am about out of the L-trytophan and once I finish that I am going to try the 5-htp and I will repost as soon as I know how it works for me. If anyone is interested in dicussing this with me just give me a holler!

Hi tc1963,

I am interested in discussing this with you further. My doctor has started Lyrica 50mg, twice a day for "probable fibro based on symptoms and family history" and I also take Mobic, once a day for osteoarthritis. It would be very exciting to be able to replace both of those with a natural supplement.

Compared to many, many people here on the forum AND compared to all the trouble my Mom has...I am at the very beginning of this journey and I'm open to trying alternative treatment options. Thanks in advance for the info.

Whatever questions you have I can help answer them! One of the first things I did was start a diary and write down what I ate everyday to see if certain foods was making my Fibro any worse and from what I could tell there really was not any, so in conjunction with that I started keeping track of physical exercise and the only thing that seemed to make the pain worse was mopping my kitchen floor along with trying to do any workout regime, so I stopped that! And that is when I discovered these two supplements. If you look them up online you can read about them. One of the websites I found on L-trytophan said it would nausea but I have not had any of that! It seems like this is really not an avenue that has been explored! If you would like I can email you the email I received from Colleen Brown about the sleep patterns and the effects. So let me know!

Do you mean L-TRYPTOPHAN?

Tryptophan is the same thing that is in turkey that causes us to get sleepy after Thanksgiving dinner and L-TRYPTOPHAN is often prescribed to people with seasonal affective disorder.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tryptophan

You are correct and one of biggest reasons for our pain is that our body never fully relaxes at night so we never go through all the stages of sleep, which means our body does not produce the natural hormones it needs to function. All these natural hormones are transmitted to our brain and when our brain is deficient then it starts to short circuit and that leads to our pain sensors being on heightened alert! Not everyone has to deal with this in there lives but there are the ones like us that do and the doctors are clueless as to how to treat it, all they want to do it see you for maybe 15 minutes and immediately put you on drugs. It seems that nobody wants to get to the bottom of the problem and figure out a real solution to fixing it. I think if our government spent more money on trying to fix or cure theses disorders and diseases and less on things that are not so important our society would be better off. I know as of tomorrow April 5th, 2008, I will be 1 month pain free! No drugs, No Ibuprofen, No tylenol just the L-trytophan 2 tablets 30 minutes before I go to bed! My life has been restored and now I am back living it! Fibromyalgia will not get a hold of me! I will get a hold of it! I am now looking forward to horseback riding again when the weather warms up again and being able to compete in barrel racing competitions in rodeo!
