I am new to this group and to FMS. Just diagnosed. I know a few things about medicine, about microbiology, about organic chemistry, and on a good day I can remember some of the things that I know.

I just finished reading the thread about alcohol and FMS. Everyone agrees that alcohol and pain medicine don't mix. Everyone seems to agree that FMS and booze don't mix. I think that everyone is correct, based on the pain that I feel now.

Reading the thread caused me to form a hypothesis which I must attempt to disprove. Here is the hypothesis:

Given:

1.)The cells of the human body can only consume 3 things; glucose, keytone, and alcohol.

2.)The consumption of alcohol acts as a diuretic and lowers the levels of salts, and the most annoying to have a depleted level of is potassium, as it caused cramping which would trigger FMS 'flairs'.

Hypothesis:

If I were to introduce Potassium iodide into my system as I drank alcohol, I could avoid a flair.

I am beginning the experiment now, and I will let you know the result.

welcome to the group. i find that no matter what i do alcohol doesn't help. especially with pain meds unless i'm looking to die. being as i am not ready for that yet. i don't bother with the alcohol. life sucks enough for me and i personaly could never justify alcohol as any part of my recovery or maintenance with this disease. my own personal opinion. take it for what it is from a recovering alcoholic who by the grace of god has not had to pick up a drink no matter what in 14 years. good luck with the experiment and again welcome to the group.

applly for prescription assistance program and try the salvation army and catholic charities they have funds set up to help. you can also get coupons from the companies for the first thirty days free. there are many safer avenues to travel. i'm sure others in here have other suggestions you can also ask the doc for some less expensive pain killers until you can get the help to get the better ones. that is what i did.(everything above) good luck keep writting.

I drink wine and sometimes Pina Coladas or Mai Tais if dh will make me one, with my meds, including pain meds... with no problems. For some reason I never get drunk or loopy having taken a pain pill and drinking. I never have had a hangover. And when they go to sedate me at the hospital they have to use more than normal. I have no idea why.

because the alcohol and pain meds together make your system more resistent to anesthesia. also the effectivness of the pain meds will lessen faster when adding alcohol. everyone has different experiences and one or two drinks may not hurt. i've heard many people tell how it started with a pain killer and a beer to ease the pain and it wasn't long months, years before they needed more of everything and nothing worked. just a chance i'm not willing to take. good luck.

I find that sometimes I get hit hard the next day after having a drink or two and sometimes it doesn't effect me at all. Cant figure it out, but I have cut down my drinking by ten fold anyway because other than the next day, my system just cant handle it anymore.
