Although a newbie to MDJunction, I'm not new to FM boards. Been on several over the years and in the beginning, it was so great to realize "I wasn't alone". Until we get a diagnosis, we think we're isolated, weird, and we're definitely totally misunderstood.

My story is involved, but basically...I developed advanced lung cancer and was inoperable. After massive chemo that worked, I became operable and got bad surgeons who messed up my diaphragm. I searched for help with the pain following further chemo and radiation. After almost 2 years, I ended up at Mayo in AZ who diagnosed FM and refused to look any further to help with my diaphragm pain. They then had me see a shrink. So, I "fired" Mayo. (I've "fired" several doctors over the years.)

I've also lost my right breast to rare cancer...caused by the chemo and radiation. That's why my "ribbon" is white (lung cancer). It was my breast surgeon who recognized my diaphragm damage and documented it.

But, at least the FM diagnosis opened "other" doors. Since Mayo thought it was "in my mind", I got no help from them, but the internet is full of great info. I realized I wasn't "weird" or "isolated" any longer. I also realized I've had FM my entire life. I never truly realized I felt different from all my friends/family (who used to tease me...a bunch...whimp comes to mind). I also realized my Mom had FM as well.

I've learned that chemicals of any sort make me feel worse. I forego prescription meds since the side effects are worse on me than the problem they're supposed to help. I've eliminated MSG (aka "natural seasoning" in processed foods) as much as possible. Also, nitrates/nitrites...and lately, gluten. And, I feel so much better. Not "cured", but better.

My "mainstay" that I take deligently is magnesium with malic acid. It's no cure...but it does help. Pacing myself is another thing I do for me.

I'm looking forward to getting to know all of you.

Welcome to our board! Wow, your medical hx sounds a lot like mine. Had breast cancer at age of 24, chemo 1 year, radiation 3 months. Lung nodules one malignant, two benign. Histoplasmosis. Heart rhythm diseases. And the radiation is to blame for my esophagus being burned, and my heart valve being destroyed. Think Fibro came from breast implant.

I take magnesium as well. Drs said one of the best things I can do.

Thanks to all of you for your warm welcome!!!! It's so appreciated...more than you realize.

Mamanordy...my heart goes out to you. Understand about the radiation damage (yes on the throat), but you've really been through it, haven't you? And at such a young age. How many years have you been in remission? And, yes, the FM did probably rear its ugly head with the transplants.

Some of you have sent me "hugs"...being so new, I don't know how to reply to them. If I haven't "acknowledged" your hug...you have my apologies. They are appreciated.

Warm hugs back....
