MDJunction to me

"I have been struggling with Fibromyalgia, Bipolar, Anxiety, Post traumatic Syndrome for quite some time and pretty much going it alone. I stumbled across MDJunction by accident. I stayed in the shadows and just watched for four days and then I joined, feeling relieved and excited to have found a safe place with alot of folks that I could relate to . It's proove to be medically and emotionally
helpful to me and now I can't go a day without coming in at least 4 or five times a day! I Love my family here.

Hello

My name is Connie 47 years old, married 15yrs this month, and mom to a 8yo son Evan who is the light of my life. I work in for a community Mental Health Agency but doing the worse thing possible do overnights. I was diagnosed (finally ) 2 years ago after many tests for different things. In addition to the fibro I also have arthritis, type 2 diabetes (10/07) and nuropathy in both feet and the make it stop now pain in legs from knee down.

I have tried many meds in the past and have a really difficult time with side effects that are bad enough that I have to quit taking them. Currently I take percocet 5/325 1 or 2 tabs a day, also have rx for ativan and flexeril that I take on occasion but most likely should take more often. Currently weaning self off Cymbalta due to getting rash and bad mood changes that fluxuated between anger and being a total sad case , I do have a PCP, Rumey, and Nuro that I work with but am going to work on finding a new Rumey since the one I work with makes me feel like I am some med seeking junkie. (This from the Dr who initally gave me 120 pills of Percocet a month for pain, and now feels that after 3 years being on 60 a month is med seeking. I offered for her to speak with my prior insurance PCP as well as my current one re: my addiction potnetial and so called med seeking for the "good stuff" but she declined. In the mean time I continue to put off taking the meds for up to 2 hours or so, or cutting med in half to see if that will cut oro cover the pain, which I see is not helping myself out and only making the pain worse because I am always one step behind it.

Just reading about fibro and scanning the posts has helped me see that I am not alone and will not hear here "It's in your head, or your just depressed". Then trying to keep quiet about how it takes me week to gear up for a full day doing stuff with family then the next day or so wiped out.

Thank you so much for the group. I am looking forward to learning much more.

Connie

Connie...have you tried Lyrica?? It is the drug of choice now for the neuropathy in your legs and feet. However, it is also a dangerous drug because it causes a lot of edema. I actually had to go by ambulance to the ER because I couldn't breathe...(pulmonary edema)..This only happened because my dosage was doubled by a doctor who was not my primary doc. Before this though, I had taken it for 2 years without a problem. I also am very prone to side affects and when it was doubled I gained 23 lbs in 2 weeks. Scary, but like I said was great at the lower dose. You may want to try it.

Gloria

PS I also have Neuropathy from mid thigh down. Hell of an affliction. I know the pain you are in and it is horrendous. Best of luck to you.

Thank you for the WW

I have looked at Lycria but after much research I am not willing to try it due to the edema problem. I already do a prn for edema in legs and feet that gets so bad they shine and I can gain 15 plus pounds in less than a week. So I am not interested in even trying it due to the risk, and being type 2 diabetic and loosing 40 pds I really don't want it back either.

Thanks again

I would avoid the lyrica if I were you. I gained 30lbs in 3 months and had to have my wedding ring cut off.I've heard from so many who have had the same problem. It did help with the pain, though. I also heard that the drug info is misleading. Most believe that only 8% of patients gain weight but I heard that it's actually 85% of people gain 8% of their body weight. I'm glad that so many of you are getting relief with lyrica, but BEWARE, especially if you already have weight issues. Once I stopped I lost 15 lbs in 2 weeks without really dieting, but the other 15 are just fat. At least bathing suit season is a while away.

Welcome to the forum Connie

Has any of your doctors tried a different anti-depressant for pain, like maybe (Elavil). I can't take it due to bad reactions but I have heard many people say it helps & you take it at bedtime. Although I think you said you work nights?

I'm on Lamictal 100mg as a mood stabilizer & the Psychiatrist was hoping it would help with pain. I can't get past 100mg though or I get these terrible headaches.

I noticed you mentioned about the Cymbalta, I just came off of that. Last day Feb 15th, weaned off for about a month. I could never handle more that 30mg & had been on 20mg for about 4 months or so then weaned.

I'm having terrible withdrawal symptoms, I'm taking my xanax to help with that. I'm going to call my Psychiatrist back today as I'm getting the rash coming off of it, not while I was on it. I had told him about the rash when I was there - I think last Thursday. It's getting way worse - I have these Hives all over my neck. Originally I had the rash on just the left side of body, but now I'm using a ruler to scratch my back. Don't the side effects of these meds drive you nuts

I hope you can get some relief soon.

Hi Connie, welcome. I am new here, this is my 3rd post I was just diagnosed on 2/27 (confirmed), but my doctor told me I probably had FM for at least 10 years (nice, eh?). I have been reading the forum for days and I have learned so much and you will too. I am 38 with one 5 year old son in WI. Hope you feel better soon, I know what you are going through. My doc put me on the Elavil, one 25 mg tab one hour before bedtime. It's only been 3 nights I've taken it and have not noticed anything yet. I have a follow up with GP in one month. Take care hun!

I am currently taking LEXAPRO for depression. I have tried cymbalta but I had halucinations. I saw rats running around. I think I was at 60mg a day when that happened. I have never tried elavil or lamictal. I am taking lyrica 300mg/day and have gained 40 pounds. I have alot of edema in my ankles and feet and hands which I watch and treat with lasix. I was at my counselors yesterday and he could tell that I am spiraling downward. I see my psychiatrist later this month and I am going to ask for something else for depression. I don't want to go down like I was in December. I couldn't get out of bed the first week in December. Does anyone have any ideas??

I had to stop the lyrica because of the weight gain. My Psych prescribes Zoloft for depression, Abilify as a mood stabilizer and vallium for anxiety and as a muscle relaxant. This seems to work for me most days.

Thank you all for the welcome. This place is great! I too have had a heck of a time weaning off the cymbalta, and have decided to check into going back on Lexapro as well as doing a increase to 3 as needed Percocet pills as needed from my PCP. I don't plan on going back to my current rumey Dr.

I work in the mental health field and most of the meds used for pain are also psych meds and along with that goes lots of potential side effects. Keep track of all meds you have tried and their outcomes, so that you don't have to try to remember them off the top of your heads.

Once again thanks a bunch..
