Regular exercise in a heated swimming pool can benefit people with the common, painful condition fibromyalgia.

Does anyone here have a heated pool, or can get to one?

I can't and i dont have one so I use my bathtub. I use quite warm water. I dont have any jets and I cant even make the water jiggle with my arms, cause they hurt too much, dang it. I hate it when that happens. Any ideas for us folks that dont have a pool and we have to use the bathtub?

Let us know, Also i'm going to put a new article in the fms articles , read it if u get the chance the name of it is: "Aquatic Exercises May Ease Fibromyalgia"

Hi messafox,

I have a pool but it is not heated. I also have one of those bath spas. they work good in the tub. They are not expensive. get one of those and you can bubble away muscle aches.

If you live close to a YMCA they have heated pools and water aerobic classes for people with fibro and muscular problems. If you qualify financially they have a grant that will let you join for free also. Check it out if you can!

I heard somewhere that it is a bad for a person with fibro to swim because you use your muscles more freely then when you get out of the water the person has pain from over use of the muscles.

I have a big garden tub and i am in it a few times a day just to relax but i havent been in a pool in years.

A member of my church mentioned swimming in the pool is good exercise for me but after i told her what i had heard she said that makes sense. I'm not sure where i heard it but i remember something about it.

Mesafox - I don't know the cost of YMCA for sure but if you qualify for the grant it is free. Be sure to ask them for a grant form. My doctor told me about it or I would not have known.

I have been in a heated pool. When my in-laws are out of town we use theres. I dont do laps or anything like that. I just float around holding onto a flotation device. But they dont go out of town much anymore.

I dont have a tub at home. we only have a shower. So I am just out of luck.

Our YMCA doesn't have a heated pool. I couldn't afford the fees anyway.

But! Ask your doctor about places with heated pools. He/She may have an idea for you. I didn't even know there was such, until mine offered something to me.

He told me I am not to walk more than 15 minutes at a time, no gym with weights, no yoga (which I did try), and just no extensive exercise at all. My body won't handle it. He suggested 'senior' water aerobics at the hospital wellness center. They only take doctor referred patients. Like I said- I didn't even know there was such.

So, I go (well, I try, weather permitting cause I have to drive 45 min. one way) two to three times a week. They waived the $15 entry fee, and the cost is only $2 a time. You only pay each month for the times that you actually get to go. The water is 92 degrees and is truly wonderful! The reason I have to go to the 'senior' class is because the class for the older people isn't quite as intense. They have arthritis classes as well.

I always joke around... there are 90 year old people in my class that can do circles around me. It is fun though. And there are some younger people in the class, they're not all actually 'seniors'.

I guess each doctor's opinion on exercise is different. So be sure to ask yours.

truckinangel i think just so long as u dont go nuts in the water and u relax ill bet u will be fine, but, u must ask ur dr. first. Unless u can remember (NOT ME)if he/she said u can do something i wouldnt do it until i asked first. The not me section was for me, i cant remember anything. I think there is a club down the street here i may check it out, although my mom wants to move back to florida, we will have to see.

I live in a tiny country town and no heated pool but have been told by pheumatologist it would help and also help with my breathing as fibro has made my chest muscles weak and I have trouble making my lungs work
