From what I know from working closely with patient medications in a skilled nursing setting and long-term care setting, originally the medication was introduced to assist diabetics dx'd with depression and neuropathy. Neuropathic pain is much different than pain due to inflammation or pain induced by cramping muscles.

From WebMD (just to confirm within myself I wasn't misinformed in my thinking)...

"Duloxetine is used to treat major depression and anxiety. It is also used to relieve nerve pain (peripheral neuropathy) in people with diabetes.

This medication is a serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor (SNRI) that works by helping to restore the balance of certain natural substances in the brain (neurotransmitters). Duloxetine may improve your mood, sleep, appetite, and energy level, and decrease nervousness. It can also decrease pain caused by nerve damage."

Duloxetine is the generic name for Cymbalta. I couldn't find, just yet anyway, if Cymbalta is sold as Duloxetine instead of the brand name.

I could be wrong, but I only heard of it 3 or 4 years ago. There is no generic yet. I think it has to be on the market so many years before it can go generic - like maybe 7 to 10 yrs.

I'm sure they are already working on another one & they will put out a stupid, crazy commerical like the Lyrica one

I forgot to drop a note earlier, I have another post on medicine & treatments. I'm tapering off Cymbalta & since doing that I just noticed today that I don't get the heart palpatations 2 & 3 times a day anymore.

I don't think palipations is listed as a side affect, but my doctor told me othere people have complained to her about it.

I took Cymbalta last year, because the company that made it said it helped with pain. They are in a lot of trouble, because they misled doctors and the public. Cymbalta is a newer generation of Prozac, which I can take. However, the drug company lied, and it does NOTHING for pain at all. It is an anti-depressant. However,it was toxic for me and made me suicidal. I was hospitalized and they doubled it in the hospital. They did not realize it was toxic for me, DUH!! My doctor saw me on my 6th day in the psych ward, and he wsa the one who figured out it was toxic to my system. I threw up constantly on it.When they started to taper me off of it, I went through the most incredibly horrible withdrawals in the world. It was just awful, and lasted almost a month. I was only on Cymbalta for two months. I would not recommend it to anyone, for obvious resaons, however, everyone's body is different. Everyone reacts differently to medicines. It is NOT going to help you with pain, and it may help you with depression. I am back on Prozac for depression now. I am also EXTREMELY sensitive to pain medications, but I am now on the Fentanyl Patch, 50 mcg., and hydrocodone ( Vicodin ) for the pain. I HAD to.. I had no choice. My body has adjusted just fine. I do much better with Vicodin than I ever did with Percocet or Darvon. If your pain is really terrible, this is where you should be. Are you seeing a general practioner or a Rheumatologist? I would REALLY recommend a rheumy. They understand the illness so much better.

Best of luck, and please let us know how you do!! I know a LOT of people who take Lyrica. Some say it helps in the beginning with pain, but it does not last. Others have great luck with it. If you want something for pain, try the Lyrica. You CAN take it with Cymbalta. Beware, though, it does cause weight gain! {{HUGS}}

I am so sorry you are feeling worse, Bella. Like I said above, the drug company lied and misled people to believe it would releive pain. It is an antidepressant, and those just do not take away pain. If you decide to stop, PLEASE ask your dr. for something to get you over the withdrawals, for it was pure hell for me. Good luck and I hope you feel better soon! It is so hard when doctors won't give you a REAL Pain reliever. I know, because it took me almost four years to find a doctor who would. Keep us posted and WELCOME!
