I just started Cymbalta about a month ago. I haven't noticed any improvement, but my doc. says to give it 4-6 more weeks. She really hopes it will help. The next step would be to try Lyrica, but I'm so sensitive to pain meds. that I'm nervous to even go there. Anyone else on Cymbalta?

What are you hoping Cymbalta is going to do for you???

They gave it to me to try to help me sleep, and I guess depression...

Lyrica is for nerve type pain...... I tried Cymbalta, did not like it...... but that is me.... I am really sensitive to meds.... The Lyrica, the jury is still out on that one cause I have just started back on it....... Was on Fentanyl patches and they really messed me up...... Please let me know how you do on the Cymbalta...

I take Cymbalta. It helps with my depression/anxiety, but I can't see that it has done much for the pain. I will always have to be on some antidepressant and I've been on many different ones over the years including Prozac and Paxil. This one doesn't seem to be any different than the others for me, but my system is used to this type of medication. My doctor didn't want me to try the Lyrica either because of the side effects. Everyone is different and reacts differently to the various meds and usually it is just trial and error until you find the right combination that works for you. Then after awhile, these meds may stop working and you have to find something else.

I am on Cymbalta. It helps with my depression and pain. Esp the pain in my legs that I have at night. So far so good with no major side effects.

Debbi (I have been on it for about 6 months now)

I am also taking Cymbalta. It was originally given to me for depression but I was also told it would help with the pain. The way my dr. explained it, it could be the next drug to be approved for fibro. Not sure if this is true, but whatever. I feel like the cloud of depression is lifting (holidays are over!) but I don't believe it's doing anything for the pain. I recently upped the Cymbalta to 50mg. What does everyone else take? What is the highest recommended dose? What are the side effects w/ each increased dose?

There were a few research studies (very small studies) which appeared to show that duloxetine (Cymbalta) relieved the pain of fibro with a mechanisim unrelated to its antidepressant effect. That was enough to prompt some doctors to begin to prescribe it off label for fibro.

I ran across several of those studies on the net if anyone is interested, PM me. I asked my primary if I could try it, since I have to be on a med for depression anyhow. When I first started taking it I was on 30 mg daily and then she wanted me to work up to 60 mg daily, which is what I am taking now (for the past 4 months).

It does not make me drowsy, in fact, when I took it in the evening I had a hard time falling asleep, so now I take it first thing in the morning. The maximum recommended dose for fibro patients is 120mg daily, effective dosage range 60mg to 120mg daily. Here's a website to check out for more info. Cymbalta differs from the SSRI's like Paxil, Zoloft, and Prozac because it also inhibits the reuptake of norepinephrine as well as seratonin at the nerve synapses (so does Effexor, but that one is not indicated for fibro)and is known as a "SSNRI" instead of an "SSRI." So far I'm doing fine on Cymbalta, and it's hard for me to evaluate how good it is for pain because I just came out of a bad flare...now my pain is not too bad again. So it may be doing more than I thought it was....

i have taken Cymbalta in the past, a high dosage, and it did help with the pain. like a couple of people have already said, it works in the brain helping with chronic pain. I have started taking it again and i'm only taking 30 mg now, my doctor wants to increse it as soon as i'm through with my counseling group. I does help with pain but you'll need to take more. the lyrical didn't do anything for me except give my all the lovely side effects BUT it has helped a lota people.

I took Cymbalta when i was first diagnosed with fibro and it helped alot. I was taking it for the depression and not the pain but after i stopped taking it i noticed the pain was worse. Since then i have lost my insurance. Is it expensive or does any one know?

yes it is expensive. my hubby just refilled mine today, our insurance changed with the new year, and he walked in the door saying "we've gotta do something about these meds you take every month!! he wasn't suggesting i stop but there has to be a cheaper way. then we had a descussion about the drug companies getting rich and how wrong it was. I don't think theres a generic for it. does any body know?
