But if you do it at a candlelight dinner, you can ask him if he understands. Ask him if he has any questions. Ask him to tell you what he's thinking or how he feels.

Not many men I know will get up from the dinner table until they are well-fed. Hey, it's just an idea, but it may be worth a shot. What have you got to lose?
