Last week, I was sitting at my desk, like usual. I was doing my homework, like I do nearly every night. I cross my legs often at my desk, whether here or at home. Nothing I did or was doing was unusual about that evening.

As I stood up, I fell straight to the floor on my second step. I got up from my chair, everything felt normal. Usually, I think that most people's feet hurt a bit when they "fall asleep". At least, that's what usually happens to me. My foot didn't hurt like it was "asleep" but apparently it was. When I stepped on it thinking everything was fine, I stepped on the side of my ankle instead of the bottom of my foot. My boyfriend's father watched the whole thing and asked "what the hell happened", I was thinking the same thing, am I really ok?

My ankles don't really bruise as much as they probably could b/c I rolled my ankles more times than I can count during my junior high and senior high sports days. But, there is some bruising and a lot of swelling. I mean by the end of the day, I have a club for a foot and my ankles look like a mini tire wrapped around my ankle. I don't think there is anything that anyone can do for me, but it's a bit weird b/c it's been 4 days of swelling suddenly 3 days after I initially fell.

Crazy stuff...kinda scary that I can lose control like that. Everyday since then, I've felt funny. Like weird in my head. I get shaky a lot during the day for no reason and when I come inside from the cold. My whole body feels shaky and my hands are visibly shaky, just like the muscles in my legs can be felt shaking inside. It's not a shiver though.

My legs can't handle more than a few minutes, and I mean minutes of walking. By the end of the day, I can barely walk to my truck to drive home. The ankle that is so swollen is my driving foot, so that doesn't help at all. Muscles in my legs that I never thought I had before are killing me by the end of the day.

The only other time that I felt like that was the day I was walking ALL day at the state fair. I was pained with every step to the car at the end of the day as I am now at the end of a work day. I've gotten to the point that I have to incorporate regular sneakers into a business casual dress code. Even with sneakers on, my legs hurt the same as if I'd worn little kitten (about an inch) heels.

Needless to say, every joint and muscle group from my toes to my hip just plain hurt. If I didn't get a hold of some type of pain medication, I know I wouldn't be walking right now or sitting up and writing this. Without pain medication, I can't even sit up at the end of the day. My legs even slightly hanging behind my knees in a chair sets my skin on fire on those days. My feet can sit flat on the floor, but just the touch of the seat is painful to me and irritating. My feet start to feel like there is no circulation and ache really terribly.

I have one month and two weeks until I get health insurance. Oddly enough, through my worst time I can't see a doctor. It seems to always happen to me like that, by the time that I can see someone, I've handled the pain and moved on like always. I was supposed to see a Rhuemy (who looks really promising, he's a leader in researching at The Ohio State University), but I had to cancel the appointment. Although my parents would pay for the appointment, I couldn't afford any of the meds that I would probably get prescribed.

I'm sorry to hear that you fell. I too sit on my feet to the point that they fall asleep. I know I shouldn't but i do. I have stood up to fast and twisted my ankle several times but it sounds to me like yours could be a more serious issue. I think its ashame that you have to suffer in pain b/c you don't have insurance. The state of this country is horrible that people in pain cannot go to the dr or afford the prescriptions that they need b/c they don't have insurance. I hope the swelling will subside and you will feel better soon and I hope you will get the medical insurance you need soon.

Thank you Hampton. I'll get insurance in January at the completion of my 90 orientation to my new job. I'll get there. I somewhat feel like it's more serious than what I previously thought. I really think I have something else going on besides Fibro by just the way that my legs feel a lot of the time and the painful spots I have on my spine. Thanks again for your thoughts Hampton!

Sorry for your symptoms - Trps are Myofascial Trigger Points

When you have TrPs, muscle strength becomes unreliable. Your grip can fail. TrPs cause muscle weakness and dysfunction before they cause pain. You may have also noticed that if one part of your body rests over another, the compressed part goes numb. TrPs can cause restrictions to blood vessels, lymph vessels and nerves. Remember that these structures pass through the fascia. Other associated symptoms may include stiffness, muscle tightness, localized sweating, tearing, salivation, poor balance, irregular heart beat, dizziness, pelvic pain, diarrhea, impotence, nausea, tinnitus, goose bumps, runny nose, buckling knees, weak ankles, illegible handwriting, headaches and muscle cramps.

While ther emay be more important underline things going on, I think you need to also deal with the anke issue. I realize it is hard when you don't have insurance but your ankle should not still be swollen and that painful a week after the fact. It is possible you broke or chipped a bone and the longer it goes untreated the more of a problem it can become. Please consider at least getting an xray. Your pcp can order one without you having to go through an emergency room visit so your cost is just the xray which shouldn't be that bad. Good Luck

Ohhhhhhhhhh....I'm soo sorry you fell. Sounds like maybe you need to go to the doc. Most of the time if I feel like there's something 'wrong'...I go! We are bad enough with the diagnosis we already have...don't let something else go without catching it quick!

I hope you feel better! Hey...where have you been young woman??

Talk soon...

I could really go see my PCP, I have a credit that nearly covers the cost of a private pay visit. Fortunately, before I switched jobs, I used the remaining money on my flexible spending account (free money basically that I received from my job as their assistance towards a $1000 deductible before insurance would pay a cent of anything). Strange thing about it is, I was going to see my PCP on Monday, but I really didn't feel that I had any symptoms that day from this incident. I thought I was better. However, it was that night that my ankle started swelling like it is. Prior to that, I could hardly walk on it. I was finding ways to walk on the side of my foot, or just my toes, or just my heel to find a spot that I could tolerate. No luck.

BShapiro, I had read about those TrP's. I posted an interesting description of Fibro under the Fibro Letter thread. This part fits me to a capital T!

"TrPs are incredibly painful areas that often feel like knots, hard lumps, or taut bands of fibers in the muscles, and they can be everywhere and often refer pain to some other part of the body. They can cause irritable bowel syndrome, dizziness and loss of balance, buckling ankles and knees, pelvic pain, painful intercourse in women, impotence in men, and many more symptoms. The tightened and rigid myofascia surrounding the muscles can entrap nerves, blood vessels, and ducts. TrPs can cause blurring of the eyes, double vision, Leg Cramps, trouble swallowing, sciatica, and numbness or tingling." (Cited in original post)

Looks like we have been reading similar things.

I should go get an x-ray. I just keep thinking to myself that it's just going to go away here soon, but I know, it's not really. Now, it's more the inside of my ankle that's swelling up. The outside is as well. Even the part of my foot below my ankle and down the top of my foot swells very much by the end of a night. I don't know how really painful it is anymore from everything I take for the Fibro issue.

One thing about this situation that's really odd. Ya know, it seems as if the most caring people are here, truly. I show my boyfriend often my foot and it's not a big deal. I show my boss and the lady in my office and they expect me to be happy-go-lucky without a care in the world. If I act pained, then they just ignore me usually b/c they can't "see" anything wrong. Well, now my ankle is like this and they treat me the same. Only you all seem to really even empathize with others around you. I can only think that this is the way you are in "real life" which makes me happy to know you all!

Oh, Suzie, I've been around. It's finals week for my classes, so I've been working on them. Plus, well, you know the rest, I gotta keep the foot elevated.

Sound like you do need to at least get an X-Ray to be sure. It sounds like you do have more going on than you think.

How is your ankle today? any better?

(((hugs)))

I went through the same thing a couple of times and it wasn't till i got my fibro book that I read it was part of the fibro. A couple of years ago a couple of weeks before Christmas, I stepped down onto my front step and my ankle gave way and it hurt sooooooo bad. But I needed to do my Christmas shopping so like a big dummy after I got done crying,I put my roper boots on and laced them good and tight. I went to wal-mart and every step was hell. I finally gave up and went home and it stiffened up on me to the point i had to crawl into the house and I almost had to cut the boots off. I couldn't walk. I went to work(docs office) he did and x-ray and made me go home for a couple of days with crutches. I had a chipped bone. I did the same thing in the summer. Same ankle, just went out on me,hurt like hell but no lasting damage. So far I've been o-kay. So be careful, and know you're not clumsy it's just another one of those lovely symptoms some of us are blessed with. Try to ignore the people who want to belittle your probledms, they wouldn't last a day in your shoes. Only those of us who go through this day after day know how hard this is. They should just count their blessings that they have good help and be good to you who doesn't have that blessing and try to make things easier instead of harder. You can always come to us for empathy and understanding.

How are you feeling??? Is it ANY better??

Ya know...it's not a bad idea at all to do like the others say and at least get an x-ray. You never know what kind of damage it caused and well, with the pain meds...it may be worse than you think and you think it's bad, so....ya know!! LOL

Now that I read all of the posts...I remembered that my ankles 'go out' on me quite often. Usually when I go down a step or run. (well, if you wanna call it running)...but anyhow, IT HURTS!!!

My 2 cents?!?!?!....get it checked...and let us know!
