I went to my Rheumy yesterday and now that he feels I m able to ""control"" my pain with Lyrica, because I m complaining now of extreme fatigue (even tho' I get enough sleep), he wants me to try the Wellbutrin (to give me energy ?)

I didn t think to ask him "isn t that for smoking cessation"" ...

Can any of you tell me what you think of it or has anyone here taken it ? What were the side effects ? Did you have problems with it ?

(I know I could just look it up online but this is ""one of those weeks"" and I need to make the most of what little online time I have this week.)

Thank you for any input ....

I've been taking Wellbutrin for several years along with an SSRI for depression and anxiety. It was prescribed originally by my psychiatrist at the time to help combat the drowsiness and sexual side effects caused by the Paxil. It is not as sedating as some of the other anti-depressants are for some people. It is helpful in relieving generalized anxiety disorder and social anxiety, and in lower doses is sometimes used to fight the the nicotine withdrawal symptoms of nervousness and agitation. So far I haven't had any major side effects from it, but I can't say that it has decreased my fatigue. It does work well for anxiety/depression along with my low dose of Cymbalta. Everyone is different though...it's funny that a rheumatologist would think that your pain is under control just because you also have fatigue. For me, often the fatigue has been more debilitating than the pain!

in regards to your question about smoking cessation. wellbutrin is an anti-depressant/anxiety medication. they happened to find that while people were on it the had a decreased desire to smoke. So the took the wellbutrin and marketed it under the name Zyban for smoking cessation. the two medications are the same. Alot of insurance companies won't pay for medications to quit smoking so alot of doctors just started writing for the wellbutrin.

I took wellbutrin for a couple of years for depression. It reallly helped me with the drpression and pain from fms. I did change my personality a little. I took a very high dose. I'm not sure about the energy though. It helped with pain which helped with everything. I didn't know about the smoking thing, I hate it when they re-label things and tell you it's something new.

One funny thing about the wellburtin, it helped with my mojo. lol I suddenly was very interested in sex. My husband was delighted with the effect, for a few weeks. then it was like "what's going on??" seems like wellbutrin helps with a lot of stuff.

Two bad experiences with Wellbutrin from me and my hubby. As far as my hubby, it made him very cloudy headed and slow. AT FIRST though, it seemed to boost his energy to the point where he was trembling and shaking. But then it just made his bright personality and great ambition turn into ambivalence. For me, it was much, much worse. I was on a lower dose (he was on 300 mg XR a day, I was on 150 mg XR a day.) It made me tremble, shake, light headed, terrible insomnia. It was so aweful that after 3 days I took myself off of it against medical advice and was subsequently fine. It did nothing for either of our depression symptoms. The only thing it did for my husband was make him less anxious as far as blowing his lid type thing, but that was only because it made him sort of brain dead. We're both off of it now and doing much better.

It never ceases to amaze me the different reactions people have to the various medications used to treat symptoms of fibro. A few days I have forgotten to take the Wellbutrin, or not got around to getting it refilled yet, and I could tell little difference. I think that our systems are much more sensitive to the side effects of medications, moreso than the "normals" out there who take the same drug. Fibro is considered by some researchers to be a disorder of "central pain amplification" and it seems to me that with EVERYTHING we ingest into our bodies the effects are amplified as well!

I was on Wellibutrin for many years for depression and they would put me on other antidepressant with this because NO antidepressants work for me. As far my experience with it, I never felt anything.
