It is such a good feeling to have friends I can tell my deepest thoughts and always get back to me with their support. I have never seen a therapist for long periods of time. Does this pain in your neck affect your temples? My temples are so sore to the touch and it shoots numbeness into my jaw. Is this normal with fibro?

Good morning Imcclure!

Yes!! The fibro pain affects the neck and goes into the head and thru the eyes and temples. Some of the headache can be caused by tension and stress.

When I was first hit with this illness I developed several types of headaches. They vary from migraine to tension and fluish types.

Do you have a supportive person who could help give you a gentle massage in the enck. If you do, have them also go up your neck into your head and right on top of the head. You'll find it VERY tender, so start out lightly untiol you get use to it. The more you can do it, the pain (hopefully) should lessen. Also massage around the temples and over the eyes. Use a hot pack and alternate with cold.

I really understand about these terrible headaches. I've lived with them for years.

I don't know how new you are to the illness, but it really takes time to understand why things happen to you and how to help yourself when you are able.

I hope you feel better and get some relief soon! Do you have anything for pain?

Take care,

Spruce

P.S. It wouldn't hurt to go to the dentist and make sure you don't have TMJ! It's very common for those who have fibro.

I quickly looked up about it in order to explain it and this is what it says:

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) syndrome or TMJ joint disorders are medical problems related to the jaw joint. The TMJ connects the lower jaw (mandible) to the skull (temporal bone) in front of the ear. Certain facial muscles control chewing. Problems in this area can cause head and neck pain, a jaw that is locked in position or difficult to open, problems biting, and popping sounds when you bite.

The TMJ is comprised of muscles, blood vessels, nerves, and bones. You have two TMJs, one on each side of your jaw.

Muscles involved in chewing (mastication) also open and close the mouth. The jawbone itself, controlled by the TMJ, has two movements: rotation or hinge action, which is opening and closing of the mouth, and gliding action, a movement that allows the mouth to open wider. The coordination of this action also allows you to talk, chew, and yawn.

Now from what else I know about it, it definitely can cause your symptoms.

How long have you been experiencing this?

Hoped this helps!

thank you so much for the explanaton. I don't have pain when chewing, but my neck is really sore (feels like a pinched nerve), my temples hurt alot, and I feel lightheaded and pressure in my temples and pressure in my upper jaw. I have been experieincing this off and on for 3 weeks, but have been in this great deal of pain for about three days. No doctors seem to know what to do except stretch and put heat on it. any suggetions?

When I get HA's, I try a hot pack and alternate with cold. If someone can massage you that would be great.

However, I'd definitely get your jaw checked out from a good dentist. At least if you can get that ruled out, you'll know your probably dealing with tension and perhaps certain migraines. Start with a dentist...if you can afford one. If not, talk to your doctor about it and he may also be able to check for TMJ.

I know how miserable you are....so here's hoping for better pain free days! Let me know if you find anything out, ok?

Ya know Imcclure, just a reminder, neck pain is very much a part of Fibro. It can spread around your whole head. One thing you could give a try until you get a doctor to check out for TMJ, is go to the chiropracter. Many times you can some releif from them. Tension and stress can make you in a lot of pain because of the fibro.

How long have you had fibro?

I was diagnosed 4 months ago. Do you go to a chiropractor? I am looking into going to one. Also, do you go for massage therapy?

When I was first hit with the fibro I did! However, they can do only so much and you do have to be careful with some of the chiropracters, because they can have you coming 2 or 3 times a week and learned the hardway you can be over manipulated. When I have a headache and I feel it in my neck I will go, but I don't overdo it. If you can start out 2x a week for maybe a week or 2 it can help. I've had to learn what my body is telling me. You'll find that the spasms are gonna be there and may not go away with chiropracters. Now I use to do massage and it was wonderful but can cost a lot. 2x a week would be good, however, I think you'll find it's temporary as with most things.

I've had this illness for 22yrs so I've had quite a head start! It's a syndrome that you'll find that can be tricky. It's a learning experience and many people have many ideas what will help or not. You have to decide for yourself because what works for one may not work for others.

Do you have a good doctor? What does he/she have you on?
