I too suffer from Fibromyalgia but about 2 months ago I decided that I would not let it ruin my life. My Physicians did not seem to know what to do for me, they kept putting me on different antidepressants which was making me extremely depressed. My mood swings were just terrible, one minute I would be fine and the next I would be biting someones head off or crying. The antidepressants were not helping my pain but making me paranoid. Oh and the weight gain it was just terrible I have gained 70 pounds and being a barrel racer and competing in rodeo that just does not work especially when my horse starts complaining. I too have had many failed relationships because of the Fibromyalgia that causes me so much pain, fatigue, the mood swings, weight gain and the feeling of unhappiness and hopelessness. At one point when I was on Cymbalta I had contemplated suicide and to this day I do not know why but when I did make it back home I threw everyone of the Cymbalta's in the toilet and flushed them and decided that it was time to take control of my life. I have a wonderful boyfriend who has personal issues of his own but has stuck by me all along, even when I told him to leave and never come back he has just given me space and let me vent. One day I decided to start researching into alternative methods of treating the Fibromyalgia, I first sent an email to a woman who wrote an article on the Fibromyalgia website about Fibromyalgia and diet. I asked her what I could do to help myself in my diet and to loose weight (to make my matters worse about weight is that I am hypoglycemic) so that makes it worse. Anyway she wrote me back and told me some interesting facts about Fibromyalgia that I never knew. One of the big things is that people with Fibromyalgia never go through all stages of a sleep cycle which will cause your body to become seratonin deprived which will cause your brain to send of pain sensors to your body. Well this is something I could not believe, so I looked up seratonin on the internet here at work and found that it is true. I also found that the reason people with Fibro is given antidepressents is to help them sleep. So I went back to seratonin and found that your body produces this chemical when you are in your final stage of sleep and we as Fibro sufferers never reach that no matter how much we try. So my next step was to find something to help me sleep that was not a drug and that is when I found 5-HTP. It is a supplement that you can buy at GNC or online at Puritans Pride. I thought what can I loose if it will help? So I bought it and started taking 1 capsule 30 minutes before bedtime and I relaxed and went to sleep and when I woke I was not drug out and I did not have any pain (the first time in 4 years). I went all day wondering when the pain was going to hit and it never did so I have repeated this for almost 2 months now, I will be pain free for 2 months on May 4th. My moods have definately changed, I am alot more calm and not so emotional, my relationship with my boyfriend, family and friends have definately improved and I feel wonderful. The other great thing about 5-HTP is that I am not hungry all the time like I was with the other drugs so I am loosing weight which has made me feel better about myself. There is help out there for people with Fibromyalgia we just have to look for it because no one wants to recognize it as a real condition.

When I have seen Physicians in the past they treat me like I am a crazy and that they say nothing is wrong with me even after I had a physician diagnose me and say that I definately have Fibromyalgia but that there is not alot that can be done. His staff made me feel like it was all in my head and I was only there for drugs! So when I started taking 5-HTP and found it was working for me I went to his office and showed him the research on 5-HTP and told him that if more doctors did research instead of seeing you for 5 minutes and giving you drugs just to get you out of there way because they have no idea what to do people with this condition would feel better. I know that maybe 5-HTP is not for everyone but I know it has worked for me, my sister and cousin. My Cousins doctor had her on morphine because he did not know how to treat this condition. Again as I said I know it may not work for eveyone but it cannot hurt to try. Look up 5-HTP on the internet and you will be amazed at what they recommend it for. Well thanks for letting me get on my soapbox today and I wish eveyone good luck, lots of love & hugs and I pray for eveyone that has this condition!

I have Fibromyalgia! But it does not have me!

Dear Midnyte: I hope today can be an easier day for you. You wrote in your original post:

I am now trying to find a way to pay my rent, place food on the table, pay the basic utilities, and find a means of transportation to my doctors.

Depending on what state and county you live in, there is help out there for you! First though, pride must be put aside in order to 'ask' for help from our Gov't offices! I hope this happens for you! I'll give you examples of what 'I' have available to me here in Geuaga County, Ohio!

There are 'many' pgms avail to us as for help with housing. They have a central County/Community Services Center. Go into their offices and they can help you find affordable housing at a reduced cost. They can direct you to food banks for help putting food on the table. And so many other services we may not even know about! Even alot of churches have food pgms for those in need. Are you classified legally as "Disabled"? Or can you get that same kind of classification from your doctor? If so, check with your local hospitals (and Doctor) as they may have pgms that you sign up for and they will 'pick you up and take you home' when you need to go to the doctor! But you have to sign up several weeks in advance of your appointment so they can fit you into their schedule. I found brochures helping pay for some prescriptions. #1 is: Go to website: WWW.TOGETHERRXACCESS.COM and see if you qualify for their help. There are 4 eligibility requirements..income, etc. etc.

#2 is from Pfizer Drug Co. Go to website: WWW.PFIZERHELPFULANSWERS.COM For their help, your meds must come from them...Pfizer! Check with your pharmacy or look on your pill bottle to see if it is a "Pfizer" med manufacturer! Oh and then there is that PPA pgm that Montel Williams does commercials for. I don't know that website name.

Last but not least, Utility companies have programs that help lower income people pay their heating/cooling bills. If you qualify with your income...go sign up for it!!

Sure hope this info can help you...and also anyone else out there that may find themselves needing assistance.

I know personally, with all the food and gas prices rising faster than a 90 yr old man who's taken 3 Viagra ...we are starting to realize we cannot afford food like we used to. When did it become a total of $97 when you go to the store for Milk, eggs, bread and dog food ?? !! We now use those nuisance coupons (WWW.COUPONS.COM) and really consider what we buy. I knew I bought that cookbook "365 Ways to Cook with Hamburger" years ago for a reason. Plus consider having 'Breakfast' for dinner. Pancakes are cheap, eggs aren't too pricey and we make our own hashbrowns! Hamburger Helper is another cheap mix to start with. And what all can we do with pasta and egg noodles! We have created our own 'garden'. (That pesty mound of dirt subject again!) But hey..we grow our own cucumbers, zuccini, tomatoes. The garden serves 2 purposes. One being free food, and lastly, a place to play in the dirt, watch nature do its thing, and if its a bad day...take that trowel and just pound the poop outta that patch of dirt. Trust me...it does "Wonders"

Sure hope this info can help at least one person in our Fibby Family! Wish you all the best in the upcoming months. Dea

Update!

My guy and I are back together and moved to Florida. Things are going better other than finances and waiting for my appointment with my new pain dr., trying to survive the reduced meds, etc. I am so glad to be back even for the brief times I can while getting my p.c. repaired. Lots of gentle hugs to all of you!

I don't know a lot about your situation, aside from what you said here. Are you on social security and/or disability? Check in your area for food banks. I had to go to one for a long time because I could not afford to put food on the table, either. If there is a Catholic Charities in your area, go to them for help, too.

You can also get help from churches usually. Explain your situation and your needs and they will be able to tell you what they can do and where to go for some other things as well.

I'm so sorry about your break-up. It is hard on significant others to see their loved ones in pain. But it's also hard on us being in this much pain. It does make relationships tricky, but you deserve to be loved and to be happy, and I am sorry things did not work out for you.

If you want, I'd be happy to exchange addresses with you over PMs, so that you can write to me and I can write back via snail mail. This will keep you connected to at least one fibro friend who understands what you are going through. Just PM me your address if you want to write letters back and forth. I know this helps me feel less lonely.

I hope things start looking up for you very soon. You will be in my thoughts and prayers!

*gentle hugs*

I want to thank you all for your support. Luckily things have brightened somewhat other than finances while my sig. other is job searching. Yes, we're back together for 2 months so far. Neither of us could stay away from the other... Moving to a new area has been stressful in ways such as getting new doctors and meds and stuff, but I love being able to go watch the sunset over the Indian River and take some shortish walks in the shallows of the river.

I hope one day I can provide the shoulder someone needs as much as the great ppl who are a part of this group. My love to all for being such wonderful people!!!
