Hi everyone,

I read some time ago that certain foods are bad if you have fibro. For example, soy products, yogurt and coffee.

I can't remember where I read this but I haven't found any other evidence about it. Does anyone here have any insight on the subject?

I can't imagine giving up coffee.

Are there other foods that should be avoided? Or foods that are helpful?

Thanks for your input.

Kat

well, my doctor told me not to drink coffee, its not like i do anyway, but that was his advice. so maybe try a trial time, and see if you feel better. if you don't, then go back to the coffee haha.

It's funny because I never even liked coffee until I started getting sick. I was so exhausted at work that I started drinking coffee just to get through the day. Now I am hooked!

I don't drink it all day anymore. Just when I get up in the morning. But if I don't have it I end up with a killer of a migraine. I may have to gradually wean myself off of it.

In the book "The Fibromyalgia Advocate" by Devin J. Starlanyl, M.D. She states that many FMS patients are intolerant of grains, especially whole grains. They often require a more balanced diet than the traditional "food pyramid", which is bottom-heavy with carbohydrates. People with FM are usually carbohydrate intolerant, insulin-resistant, and have reactive hypoglycemia. She says that many people often mistakenly believe they have good nutrition when eating hot or cold cereal or fruit and toast for breakfast, a salad or vegetable for lunch, and a pasta dish for dinnner. Instead they should eat something more like-- cottage cheese, meat and fish, or even a little tofu if necessary to get protein in with each meal. Make sure every meal is balanced with protein, carbohydrate, and a little fat. She suggests looking at the Barry Sears' books and following his "Zone Diet" suggestions. I have a couple of his books and eating this way has helped me. I am just bad about not always eating a balanced meal like this. I think it would make a bigger difference for me if I followed it regularly. But it's not like if you cheat one meal you have to give it all up. You always have the next snack or meal to eat in a more balanced way. It doesn't have to be all or nothing. I do feel better when I eat this way though.

I have heard of specific foods that those with FM are supposed to be more sensitive to, but don't remember all of them. I think it would depend somewhat on the individual too. There are a lot of books that have info. on this.

(I love finding out what I'm NOT supposed to eat...I wonder if that big brownie was on the DO NOT EAT list??!!! )

There has been little information available from the scientific community on nutrition and diet for Fibromyalgia patients. Research has not yet proven that any specific foods affect fibromyalgia (FM), positively or negatively. But we do know that eating a good balanced diet helps everyone’s body function at its best. Good nutrition can help in your health and healing. Eating healthful foods including those low in fat and high in immunity boosting antioxidants and phytochemicals may work together to help maximize energy and alertness and minimize constant fatigue and lethargy.

Many people have overcome their FM symptoms by changing their lifestyle and diet. Mary Moeller, author and spokeswoman on FM, now enjoys a state of remission from her FM symptoms by making a few changes in her lifestyle. To reach this ideal she advocates eliminating 4 foods completely from your diet (Mary Moeller’s Fibromyalgia Cookbook.)

1. Chocolate

2. Carbonated beverages

3. Coffee

4. Alcohol

Along with changes in nutrition she encourages stretching, exercising and drinking 8+ glasses of water a day. Also, in Mary Moeller and Joe Elrod’s book, The Fibromyalgia Nutrition Guide, they advocate a more complete list in order to overcome fatigue and feel your best. The 12 items to avoid are:

1. High fat dairy foods

2. White sugar and white flour

3. Fried foods

4. Preservatives, junk food, and salt

5. Red meat (especially salt cured, cured bacon, smoked, or nitrate cured)

6. Coffee and caffeinated teas

7. Colas, soda pop, and carbonated beverages

8. Liquid with your meals

9. Alcoholic beverages

10. All forms of tobacco

11. Prolonged periods of direct sun exposure

12. Nutrasweet and saccharine

Caffiene is a no-no. there is less swelling when you don't drink caffiene. Chocolate is another. But don't scream just yet. There is ways to fool your body and mind and other changes you can make in your eating habits that may help. Drink diet caffiene fee soda if you have to drink soda. Switch to de caf coffee and tea. Another thing i have found to help is going organic. I understand it is pricey but the results are great. I have lost several pounds since i went organic. If all else fells talk to your doctor.

I try to buy fresh or organic. it is just so expensive sometimes. I am getting to the point where I need to start growing alot of our feed.

my dh said he will build a raised bed so that I can work with my plants at a hight where it is easy on me. I can hardly wait.
