We go on a "family" vacation every year in the end of May. My in-laws, 2 brother in laws and their wives, and 10 kids ranging in age from 1yr--up to 15 yrs. We stay together in a huge house that has plenty of room for all of us, but not much quiet space or privacy. This will be my first time away from home and my own bed since my diagnosis of FM/IBS. I know that I will not sleep well as my youngest son doesn't sleep when we are not home and I don't either. The food issues are also a worry for me for the IBS. Do you have any suggestions on things to try when away from home?

On a unrelated topic. I was wondering how you have communicated with your spouse. Mine is a great guy, but not very sympathetic towards me in the last few months. I do not lay in bed all day (even though I feel like it sometimes) I work full time and have my four kids at home. But in the evening I just "crash" sometimes quite early. As soon as the youngest kiddo is in bed I usually follow.

Suggestions on either of these issues would be greatly appreciated

Hurtallover:

I travel alot with my job so I take mt own pillows and I also take a cooler of the foods that I know that will not upset my IBS. True friends and family understand.

I agree with the pillow idea. I always sleep better with my own pillow. Take a cooler with the foods you know you can eat and tell everone you are on a Doc order diet.

Make and appt to see your dock before you go. inform doc of IBS issues and ask for a time medication for your trip. You Doc may have some good ideas on how to make things easier.

Good sugestions. It can always be upsetting to the system when your away from home. If you have pain meds and muscle relaxers ect that you will be taking with you. Please with a bunch of kids around get a small lock box to put them in so noone's children accidently come accross your medication. Do what you can with the group when you can it's not worth it to overdo and pay for it after.

When I am on vacation, I ALWAYS do NOT eat any kind of corn, and NO salads. That can cause an IBS flareup big time. I always have the doctor prescribed drug "LOMOTIL 2.5MG" and as the saying goes, I never leave home without it. One (or 2 at times) of these pills BEFORE you leave the hotel room, before eating breakfast, etc and you are good to go. Well, no..not good to "go" per say, as this will make you NOT go. Make sense?? No matter what, after I finish a meal....boom, its right to the bathroom!! But with the Lomotil, I am fine...no running anywhere with that pill. You will get back to your 'daily schedule' per say the next day.

I always take pictures with me of my dogs, and/or my hubby if I am alone. I crawl into that nice hotel bed and the last thing I see is pictures of my loved ones. I can then sleep alot happier and more content. Hope this helps you.

I always take my own pillow and sometimes even my own topsheet or quilt. I am very "touch-sensetive" I don't like sleeping in a bed where things feel different and having my own pillow and sheets helps me feel more at home. Make quiet time for yourself. If its just a walk or something more extreme like locking yourself in the bathroom and soaking in the tub (ear plugs/earbuds optional). Take care of yourself first!!! Have a great time!
