I have a real problem with getting up off the ground when i do things and sometimes just even walking straight. i was thinking about getting a large breed dog, maybe a mastiff or something like it and training it for helping me as just support or a help up off the ground. any thoughts on this. i saw on animal planet one time a lady uses a st. bernard to help her get up and down and things like that.

Hi wolflover,

This thought has crossed my mind as well...I think it is something that my Mom could possibly benefit from.

the only problem i see with it, is trying to explain a huge dog when you go shopping with them or travel as a service dog.

I think a dog would be a good idea myself however for me the problem would be, how to train the dog to vacuum and clean the bathtub and change the bed.

Service dogs can be trained for many things they are not just for the Blind. My friend who has very severe back problems and is disabled has a service chocoalte lab. He gets he laundry out of the dryer, helps her get up from a sitting position and stuff like that. There are service dogs that are trained for people who have siezure disorders and stuff like that. If it is a service dog they can not deny acces to the dog from what I understand but you want one that is trained by professionals. I din't however think they do the tub and vacuuming sorry Maineiac. LOL

Oh rats, Snoopy! Well it would have been nice. Maybe I could get one of those trained service monkeys then and get it to do the tub and vacuuming.

wolflover, this is a cool idea! I never thought about a service dog before. I thought about getting a dog for companionship because I am home alone a lot. But, I think this might be a really good way to get the companionship and help I need all in one. I have trouble with anxiety attacks and wonder if a trained dog could possibly help me not have an anxiety attack by just knowing I wasn't alone, and that if something happened it would be trained to get help or something. I might look into something like this too. Let me know if you find anything out about getting a service dog. I do agree that the dog would need to be trained by someone that knew what they were doing. That's certainly not me

(I also agree with Maineiac -- doing the tub and vacuuming would be great...if only!)

I just found out as long as the dog is a service dog you shouldn't have a problem with being able to take them anywhere and everywhere.

"As of January 1, 1992, the Americans with Disabilities Act provides pubic access for service dogs as a reasonable accommodation for a person with a disability."
