I went to my pain doctor this morning for my bi-monthly visit. While I was waiting to 'pee in the cup', I struck up a conversation with the lab lady. I told her I didn't like the one side effect of Lyrica~that being the weight gain. (23 lbs in 2+ months). She said that my having a lack of sleep (2-4 hrs dly)...that the "lack of sleep causes you to gain weight" ! ! ! ! That your body requires a good 8 hrs of sleep to 'repair' itself and lack of sleep can cause your body to "not" metabolise correctly, repair itself, etc etc. She mentioned this to the doctor as he was passing us and he said...YES, its true. Wow !! So like if I drug myself up at bedtime as best as possible in order to sleep a full night, I'll loose weight? Cool...I'm gonna sleep 10+ hrs!!(in my mind, of course) Now THATS my kind of diet plan!! Anybody heard of this before? I thought it was the one bad side effect of my Lyrica and my high fat diet.

On a separate note he now wants me to see a Rheumatologist as he suspects the weakness and pain in both of my hands may be RA! Great...another new problem to add to my list?

Lately I have read the same thing in some of the health magazines I get.
Be wise and dignified like the swan: he maintains his composure, staying unruffled on the surface, while always paddling like crazy underneath.

I know that lack of sleep will cause weight gain, but I do not know if sleeping a long time will actually make you lose any weight.

I can understand the concept of your metabaolizm working better if your properly rested but I would still be concerned with the 23 pounds in two moths since starting the Lyrica. Yes weight gain is a side effect of Lyrica and should be addressed as such. While I'm sure she was trying to give you helpful information don't disregard the fact that the Lyrica is a contributing factor. I', sorry to hear that the DR. thinks you have RA but I wish you luck at the rheumy
