I sleep horribly and wake up unrefreshed, and just plain exhausted. My mom thought that it might be a good idea to use tylenol PM..might help with the aches and my sleeping?

SO I WOULD TALK TO YOUR DOC FIRST. EVEN THOUGH I DIDN'T BECOME DEPENDENT IN THE SENSE THAT I WANTED TO TAKE IT..BUT MY BODY COULDN'T HANDLE NOT BEING ON IT.

Hey Nicole

I agree with Christina in that you need to check with your doctor to make sure that there wouldn't be negative interaction with the meds you may already take.

Personally, however, I've had to use meds to get a good nights rest. I'm sure you'll get lots of other input as well!

Hey Nicole,

I'll get my disclaimer out of the way first

**FOLLOWING ADVICE IS FROM SOMEONE UNTRAINED IN MEDS **

If you are not taking any medications at all right now, I don't see the harm in taking the tylenol PM...as long as it's taken per the directions on the box.

Also, I would advise going ahead and setting up an appointment with your doctor so he/she can evaluate the sleep issue. Disruptive sleep patterns are very bad for fibro.

Again, this is my opinion

I do not get much sleep at all. I have kind of learned to live with it. I also have not been able to sleep in a bed since Christmas time. I sleep in my recliner. Im lucky if I get 4 hours of sleep. Usually it is 2. I have tried numerous meds, prescription and otc to try to help me out, but nothing works for me. Some of the insomnia also comes from my bipolar too. Sometimes I go 3 to 4 days with absolutely no sleep at all. I have since gotten a new script for my bi polar, but still does not seem to do much good for the sleeping issue.

Tylenol Pm is just Tylenol and Benadryl. Alot of over the counter sleep medicines contain Benadryl. while it technically is an antihistamine it does have a drowzy effect that can help some people sleep. That said I agree with Bkwrm you should talk to your doctor about getting a sleep study done. Sleep disturbances are very common with fibro patients and in most cases can be easily treated. You need to have as much quality sleep as possible to get through the day

Yes sleep disorders are very much a part of fibro. But I would advise you to ask for a sleep study. If you have a sleep disorder and they put you on a CPAP machine (which I use) you will get some of the best sleep you've had in a long time. If you are saying to yourself I don't have sleep apnea - there are other types of sleeping disorders. My husband has been on his cpap for several years. He can't sleep without it. Three years ago because of bad sleep he wanted to have me take a sleep study. I told him I know what sleep apnea is and I d on't have it. And I was right; I didn't have sleep apnea. I had sleep hypopnea. I don't think I spelled that correctly but it simply means that my type of sleep disorder, when I lie down, my lungs don't breath deep enough. So my oxygen levels during the nights were dropping. So I was put on my cpap to forse air into my lungs.

I tried to do a sleep study at a local sleep lab a few weeks ago, but my problem is not being able to fall asleep to begin with. Since I have trouble at home in my own nice warm comfortable bed, I don't know how I could be expected to quickly and easily fall asleep at the sleep testing center with electrodes all over my face and scalp and body, restless leg syndrome acting up because of nervousness and discomfort, knowing the room had a camera watching me, and then told I should fall asleep on my back so they could get a better reading. I NEVER fall asleep on my back, always on my side with pillow between my knees for my aching back and knees -- so I try to turn onto my side with all of those wires connected to the machine, the wires get tangled up in my pajamas, and a couple of electrodes fall off my legs! The tech comes running into the room, mad at me for this and asking me why I can't fall asleep. She says you have to be asleep by midnight because they need at least 5 hours of readings...and they get everyone up at 5 AM and boot them out the door at 6 AM! I am not an early bird and I don't go to sleep before 1 PM at home. So I told the tech, I am so nervous and uncomfortable and upset by the unpleasantness of this whole procedure that I know I won't be able to get to sleep with only 10 minutes left before 12 midnight. I ended up telling her I wanted to leave and go back home.

The tech seemed mad at me and really put out, and she ripped the tape off my electrodes as hard as she could so my skin was aching and burning for hours afterwards. She had never heard of fibro and didn't seem to believe me that my skin is extra sensitive to pain.

They didn't give me a sleeping pill to help me fall asleep because it might disrupt the normal sleep wave patterns. But then...as I left, the tech said, "maybe you can come back again and your doctor could give you an Ambien first...but we can't give you anything here."

I think it would take a whole BOTTLE of Ambien to put me asleep, or maybe a general anesthetic at that lab -- I felt like a lab monkey and I never want to see that mean tech again! I was never so glad to be home in my own bed again in my life!

Now my doc says I should try it again...hmmm. I don't think I can. At least not without a LOT of knock out drug before hand. I don't know how people can just fall asleep in that situation, it is so uncomfortable.

So if I have sleep apnea...it will be awhile before I am willing to find that out.
