My friend that is a nurse practictioner says:

STRETCH STRETCH STRETCH STRETCH STRETCH

It doesn't matter if you really exercise, just keep stretching so your muscles stay used to doing work. She nearly drives me crazy. She even bought me a book for Christmas. It is embarrassing, but I doing the senior citizens section with my mother and I am 44.

Meleggs, years ago I had IBS so extreme, At first I thought that I was just getting the flu over and over, I would be on the floor for four hours at a time. Finally I went to the doctor and he figured it out. I still get it once in a big while but a nurse told me she couldn't eat lettuce because it would do the same thing to her. I had a salad with every meal. I loved my salads, now once in a while I will have a small amount of fresh spinach. It digest a little better. If you eat healthy your body rejects, if you don't it healthy your body rejects, Im Sad.. I take those IBS tablets from Wal-Mart and they work really well for me if I feel something coming on.

I think it all counts, any small steps we take is better than no steps at all. I can't exercis in the mornings because I am to stiff, I have to get going first. Its just baby steps when it comes to exercise. When you have better days just put in 5 minutes. But if you can't, you can't. Were all different and at different levels in our illness. Somedays lifting my cup of coffee is enough for me.

It's really thinking differently about exercise. Like Sandy said stretchin is really important. A bike is not good- puts alot of stress on your knees. Honestly if you can walk a little either around your neighborhood or on a treadmill and I mean a little. Start 5-10 minutes at a normal pace. If you can do that for a week add 3 more minutes. This comes from someone who used to be an aerobics nut and also did step aerobics. This approach might seem wimpy or unimportant but you have to start at YOUR LEVEL. If it makes you feel worse you are doing too much.

Since I have restless leg I count the nights that I am moving all night trying to get them to stop moving. I bet I walk at least 3 miles a night. Then on days that I really don't think I can do anything just walking around the backyard looking at the flowers and stuff is what I count as exercise. Shopping also counts in my opinion, especially since it always seems further to the car when I am walking out to it. We are all smart people could we not invent something like our clickers to start the car and have it come to us. I don't like shopping anymore, if I remember what I went for then I have to remember where I parked, and then I have to unload the stuff. Internet shopping is the best. Then at least my fingers get the exercise. The treadmill for 10 minutes is something that I always say I will try as I walk by it. I think it was Suzzee who said she dances to songs I think that is great because it also makes us happy and we all need to smile another exercise smiling. Jean

The key is to start EXTREMELY slow. Even if its walking from one side of the room to the other, the next day, walk it twice. You'll be surprised how fast you can build yourself up to actually exercise. When I started I only lifted a one lb weight twice, then the next day I did it 3 times. Slow very slow.
