Well my doctor has made a decision to never give me pain medication again. I have never been addicted to anything in my life (except maybe food). Her reasoning...I'm on too many medications. So I came home and I doubled my dose of Neurontin and I was still in an unacceptable amount of pain. So I ramped it up to 3 neurontin three times a day which is what the rheumatologist says is the maximum dose. Since I'm with the VA I don't get to see the rheumo but about twice a year. I go again in April and I know they will be angry because I increased my dose without a doctor's prescription but I'm really feeling angry, resentful, my feelings are hurt by my doctor and I just say to hell with it. I do not suggest anybody follow my lead, I'm just venting about how I can't get treatment and it seems like I have to be my own doctor with this awful disease. It's pretty disheartening to think you have all this pain and doctors don't care, or they don't believe you. I've never been so disgusted with the medical community in my life.
I can't do everything all the time, but I can do some things some of the time.

Maybe this isn't the best doctor for you, but I understand that when you are with the VA you don't always get a lot of say in who sees you. I know we have all talked about how difficult it is to find the right doctor, but in this case I don't think you have any choice but to try to find someone who understands fibro.

I have to agree that increasing you med without a doctors order is never a good practice. It can be dangerous for you too.

This disease is so hard to deal with. Then when we have to deal with doctors and disability people and medicines it seems almost impossible.

Try to hang in there. I am thinking of you and praying tha you will find the right doctor.

Is neurontin really bad? I haven't had any strange reactions yet but I just ramped up to max dose a week ago. It makes me feel kinda "hi" but that's about it. My pain has decreased but I know I should not take any medication in any amount without a doctors guidance. Has anyone else had neurontin horror stories?

First of all I would like to send you a huge virtual hug. I lived with pain for several years because of drs. just as you are describing. It got so bad, I began to wish they would get whatever I had so they would understand more. Finally, after being out of work for a month with a migraine and pain all over, I found a neurologist that told me I had fibro and put me on some pills called pamelor (spelling?). They helped a good deal but he would only prescribe them for one month, so it was back to the pain 24/7 and no one really believing me. I was told "fibro is a diagnosis that is given when they don't know what is wrong with you or don't want to say you're a hyprocrondriac (sp?)". I eventually moved to CO where a nice lady dr. began prescribing some pain meds for me and tried to get me into a pain control clinic which was backed up for several months. In the meantime, (getting back to the neurontin point), they suggested she try me on neurontin to help control the pain and some of the muscle spasms I was having. It made me sooooo much tireder, didn't really help with the pain or muscle spasms and as another said, made me feel sick and vomiting quite a bit. They told me to continue taking it for at least 3 months to get it regulated. I did, sadly and continuing with the sick feelings and extra tiredness, until I couldn't stand it anymore. I pray your drs. will find the right medicines for you and ease your pain. My pain control dr. gives me shots in my low back, shoulder and knee joints, 2 pain meds, a pain patch, and a muscle relaxant and I am still in pain, so I can only imagine how much pain you are in without anything but neurontin. My dr. says swimming will help a lot but I am deathly afraid of water deeper than just above my knees so I can only do partially as he instructs. Perhaps this is something you could try? I wish you the very best of luck!

I too live in Colorado and have a wonderful primary care doctor and rhuemetologist. I have also tried Lyrica and could not tolerate that either. But keep searching and you will find a doctor that believes and wants to help. I too was told water aerobics could help. I honestly don't think there is anything that will make the pain go away, but there are meds that will ease it some. I am also on a muscle relaxant, mobic and tramadol plus an antideressant for the fibro. I hope you find a place for good care soon>

I'm in Colorado Springs, wow three people here from Colorado. I do take a muscle relaxant (that my psychiatrist gave me (valium) because he felt sorry for me that my primary care doctor wasn't helping. I have alot of tramadol but I just don't get relief from it. It seems like once you say "Tramadol doesn't work for me" they think you are drug seeking. I hated being treated that way. They act like you're a drug addict and everyone in the office or the ER treats you differently and seems annoyed by you. Anyone ever get this feeling? I am seeking a medication that will get me out of pain. When you hurt this bad you can't get high on pain killers. They become a necessity. Nobody understands that.

I really miss Colorado now. Two nice ppl I could have possibly met with in person to vent. *lol* I am lucky to have a pain control doctor who subscribes stronger meds than many seem to be taking on here. I take 2 strong pain killers, robaxin for muscle spasms, and lidaderm patches that I can use up to 3 at a time and they can be cut to fit the area of pain. I am still in lots of pain and cannot understand how any of you deal with only taking tramadol and milder meds. If I were back on those type meds, I would not be able to walk at all and not sure I could handle living. My pain control dr. told me in the beginning, if you need the medicine, you won't become addicted to it. We are trying to manage my conditions/ailments/diseases without increasing my meds more than once a year. I hope I don't seem to be trying to make my situation worse than anyone else. After awhile of living with pain, you learn to read between the lines and can imagine how much pain others are in and that is one reason I am sending out HUGE hugs, my best thoughts, and prayers to anyone dealing with illnesses/conditions/ailments. I include all three because I hear ppl use all three terms.

Geesh, I didn't realize how much I ramble at times..... *lol*

I get the opposite. I cannot take mind altering medications as they prevent my ability to care for my toddler (I am a 24/7 single mom). If I'm falling asleep because of pain pills, who is going to take care of my child?

So they tell me, you won't take pain pills, you must not be that bad.

My old doc told me that he thought I needed a psychiatrist because he didn't thing I was processing pain properly and he couldn't keep giving me pain meds. I went ballistic on him and told him to check my chart again because I had asked for NO pain meds and declined those offered to me.

These doctors are all in a conspiracy. The makers of Motrin and Tramadol must really be offering doctors alot of vacations and automobiles (yes it happens I worked for a doctor) Lexapro guys brought free lunch every day and guess what everybody was prescribed????? Lexapro. The pharmaceutical companies have the doctors in thd palm of their hands. Docs don't make money giving pain killers, they go to Jamaica by prescribing Lyrica or anything else that's expensive.
