[size=4][/size]Hey all, I'm new to this group and to the syndrome. I wanted to share that I have a few friends with Fibromyalgia and they have shared with me that caffeine seems to induce their symptoms. I myself always had caffeine in my system and depended on it to get through my day. Whether it was pepsi or coffee, I needed it! Since my friends have mentioned their sensitivity, I've cut caffeine out of my diet. I still find myself craving it, and will give in about 1-2 times per week. I notice a big difference.

I haven't really researched this because I take the word from my friends as research too. If somethings works or doesn't work for them, I wanna know Dr.'s and researchers can only find so much information, but it awesome if you know real people and can share information with eachother....this is why I'm happy I found this group!

I'm curious as to what symptoms were helped by not taking in caffeine? I mostly get it from coffee in the morning and it would be difficult to clear the fog and fatigue without it. Just curious what it has helped. Thanks

Mostly with the pain! The tension in the back decreases and that helps eleviate pain, spasms, twitches, etc. With the decrease in pain, you get more energy. I know for me, I get tired out so easily because of the pain! For me personally, when I drink a cup of coffee or a can of pepsi, it will help me for a little bit, and I'll feel pretty good, but then it all comes crashing down on me. The sugar/caffeine high that the drink gives me causes me to have a bigger crash. I just quite drinking my pepsie and coffee about a month ago, and I can feel the difference. My bad days seem to not be as bad! I've started heading to Jamba juice in the mornings after I drop my Kindergartener off at school. My 2.5 year old and myself enjoy the healthy pick me up in the mornings. I always get an extra boost of Omega 3 and Calcium. They have several boosts you can add to your smoothie to help you get through your day.

Anyways, if your skepticle, at least try cutting caffeine out of your diet for 1.5 to 3 months. Its not a cure, but it may be able to help

I also found this article encouraging the use of caffeine! Be your own Dr. Experiment with foods and drinks. Reasearch online and be your advocate. I'm such a newbie to the diagnosis, however I've suspected for several years that I had Fibromyalgia. I also may have Lupus...but we have to wait for more flare ups as I've only had one bout of inflammation in my kidneys and bladder that predisone helped with.

Anyways, here is one of the things I found:

Great news! Caffeine can actually help fibromyalgia patients. Dr. Lowe is an advocate of caffeine use by fibromyalgia patients—unless, of course, it bothers you. A small percentage of people get an unusually strong stimulatory reaction from coffee or have other adverse effects from it; these people probably shouldn’t use caffeine. (This is true in the general population as well as among fibromyalgia patients.) But for most patients, caffeine can help control fibromyalgia symptoms, mainly because of its ability to temporarily raise the resting metabolic rate.

There are several long sections in The Metabolic Treatment of Fibromyalgia about the effects of caffeine on fibromyalgia patients and how they can use it judiciously. Caffeine has a positive effect on pain, depression, mood—I could go on and on. Instead, here are two very short quotations from The Metabolic Treatment of Fibromyalgia:

From pages 1035-1036:

"Because it is the most commonly used drug today, caffeine has been subjected to extensive clinical and experimental study.[160] Caffeine reduces, and in rare cases appears to temporarily relieve, some fibromyalgia patients' pain, fatigue, weakness, cognitive dysfunction, and depression. Caffeine increases the resting metabolic rate, internal and skin temperatures,[58][59][60][61][62] and mitochondrial oxygen consumption.[63][65] It produces physiological arousal,[87][88] can improve mood[87][88][91] and perception of problems,[90,p.9] and mitigates pain.[1,p.92][101][103][104][105][106][108] [109][110][111][112]"

From page1038:

"Effects of Caffeine on Cognitive Function. For people in general, caffeine improves cognitive function. My clinical experience has shown that this is especially likely if a patient's cognitive abilities are impaired as a feature of fibromyalgia.

There are many published studies on the beneficial effects of caffeine on cognitive function. It fact, caffeine is listed as a mild brain stimulant and 'cognitive enhancer.'[5]"

Since caffeine may have adverse effects for some people, Dr. Lowe also explains those in The Metabolic Treatment of Fibromyalgia.

I hope this information helps you make a decision about whether or not to give up your coffee. Sounds like if you have it in moderation—so you don't experience migraines—coffee's analgesic effects certainly benefit you. Fibromyalgia patients need all the help they can get!

Tam_me, this is all very interesting. Thanks for posting it. I had cut nearly all caffiene out of my diet. Now, when I have some, I can tell a difference..it's not pretty, I get a bigger flare. So, hmmmm another thing for me to watch for.

Oh, and welcome to the group! I hope you find it as helpful as I have. Everyone here is great. We'll be here with you.

I had heard something a long time ago that caffeine does aggrevate the sx of fibro, but i conducted my own study probably 10 years ago on that and i honestly didnt feel any differently so i didnt cut caffeine out completely. i only have one cup of coffee a day, and 1/2 of a diet coke. once a week i splurge on a starbucks but have been getting the decaf ones and they are pretty good.

I've never noticed that coffee affects fibromyalgia at all. However, it does help me with RLS. I drink one cup and I can finally sleep.

A while ago I cut down on my soda intake but never really noticed any difference. I only had 1 diet coke a day. Lately I have been drinking more again and am having more pain.....I am going back to 1 as of tomorrow now! I am going to pay close attention to my pain and see if it changes. Even if it does a little that would be great!

Yes, unfortunately "caffiene" affects our fibro pain as well as the artificial sweetner in "diet" drinks!

I stay away from them now

I had read some where before that caffeine is bad for fibro. And I cut it out for a while trying to get rid of the pain. But in the end it made no difference. Guess we are all different. I am thankful it does not make my pain worse, cause it helps me fight the fog as someone else wrote.
