I got a book from the library on FM and it is about a diet to help with the fatigue. It states to stay away from carbs. Does anyone think this would help? It says the Atkins Diet is great for FM. I had thougth that diet was hard on your kidneys.

It depends on what kind of carbs you're talking about. Definitely get rid of as much sugar and white flour as you can. But fruits, vegetables, and grains have carbohydrates as well and my dietician told me that we should be eating lots of those if we want to eat a healthy diet.

I believe the reason they say that the "atkins diet" is hard on kidneys is it is high in protien..This ,protien,helps eliminate water..so it could put excess stress on kidneys,,,always check with your health care professional before undertaking any diet..the other post in ref. to white sugar ect...anything "white" take out of you diet is a good rule of thumb...High fiber is good and a well balanced diet,,I like weight watchers,,,good luck,, have them,, Drs check your ph.. sometimes this causes pain...Lesley/savedone

My drs. have all told me eat lean meats and lots of fruits and veges. High fiber will help too. It is very omportant to make sure we drink enough noncaffeinated liquid. Our meds can dehydrate us so we need to drink a lot.

I have found that non caffeinated beverages are essential to my life.... I went caffeine free many years ago hoping to improve my sleeping. The added benefit was less pain......Weird, but I felt that connection. The sleep didn't really improve, but I did notice the correlation between caffeine and pain. I do drink lots of H2O!!!! A little red wine just in case it really does benefit my heart . High Fiber I did for the IBS. Fruit and Veges because gosh darn it, I just like them! The meat thing, well, if I eat meat it HAS to be lean or I gag. I don't like fried and I dont' like fat. But I do struggle on the carb thing. If you put a lean steak or nearly any pasta in front of me, I will go for the pasta every time. Not bread so much, but NOODLES OF ANY KIND!!!!!! I am going to try restricting my carbs and see if this helps. I already practice positive thinking and movement, movement, movement no matter how much it hurts and no matter how much I don't feel like it. Looking into vitamin therapy and some other holistic stuff too. Just started Lyrica and doing very well with it. It is helping me and I have lost nearly 10 lbs since I have greater freedom of movement and more energy because I am SLEEPING for the first time in 15 years

thanks for everyones input, i really need to change my eating habits. I am a big mt. dew drinker (and its the worse). Willy I love your attitude. I do my best to keep on the move also.

amyjo08, If I drank a Mountain Dew I think I would land on the MOON!!! lololol....... Caffeine is just about as hard of a habit to break as smoking in my opinion.... I think FMS makes it even harder to break because so many of us suffer from fatigue, fog and drug haze and feel we need caffeine to clear the head.... Take it slow like withdrawing from anything. Some would rather have a little more pain as an exchange for what they perceive to be mental alertness...

I get my mental alertness from moving instead of caffeine. Those endorphins are good for you!

The Adkin type diets....high meat protein, is not only hard on your kidneys but on your liver as well!

Our bodies are NOT built to eat high amounts of meat. We can get healthier protein in other ways. This is coming from a former STEAK girl

CARBS...that is GOOD CARBS are extremely healthy and good for us. Whole grain breads, pastas, rice, beans, legumes.

Lot's of fresh veggies and fruits. Also, eating as many in their RAW state as possible!!!

Carbonated/caffienated drinks are HORRIBLE to our bodies. I used to be a coke -cola girl myself...LOVED loved loved the stuff. Was very hard to get off it because I LOVED it But wow what a huge difference it made in the way I feel when I finally got off it!

So, NO a adkin type diet is NOT good for Fibro or anything else!

The Adkins diet is not good for someone who suffers from fm. The high fat in meat will increase your chol. which will block blood and oxygen flow to your struggling cells. Actually, no caffeine, sugar, or alchol. is the best diet with moderate low fat meat. Plenty of raw veggies and fruit, and some simple complex carbs. The best are found in wheat based items. Good luck.
