I am wondering how many have the feeling as though you have to physically make your lungs work. I have had all the breathing tests and heart tests and still feel so out of breath and cant sleep longer than 2 hours due to feeling I need air

Cheers Lee

Hi,

I have those feelings to but i think my biggest problem is walking to far or up stairs then i am out of breath. It is a horrible feeling. I didnt think it was a side effect or associated with fibro but i guess its another one of those things.

Hugs, Alicia

Hi Lee...WELCOME TO THE GROUP!!

The only time I have to physically make my lungs work is when I'm having an anxiety or panic attack. Other than that...I think I'm pretty good as far as my lungs go! ***KNOCK ON WOOD*** (i just thumped my head btw)

I hope this doesn't cause you too many problems...we have enough as it is!

Again, welcome!! You're gonna love it here!

Hi magickalmum,

you mentioned that you only sleep a couple of hours at a time because of the feeling that you need more air. Perhaps you have sleep apnea?

Have you had sleep studies done? I am supposed to have one soon because I wake up a lot at night and don't go into a deep sleep. One of the things they will be looking for is sleep apnea.

Also, I sometimes feel light headed and a little short of breath when I have to stand up from a seated position if I've been sitting for awhile, or getting out of bed in the morning. It's called orthostatic hypotension, and it means low blood pressure when you get up suddenly. That can give the feeling of being out of breath too. I read that this is pretty common with fibro. I have the same problem if I go up steps too quickly. The trick for me is to slow down and take it easy when standing up or going up steps.

Hi yes I have had a sleep study done and was told I have mild sleep apnoea but this problem also shows it head during the days sometimes. i still belive it is thyroid( and or fibro related too ) despite tests showing normal. I was told by a friend who is a nurse that even though tests are normal I may need to be at the lower end of normal so will discuss this next at my doc appointment. I am so sick of feeling short of air.

Yes I thought of panic attacks too and so put it down to that but the dsrn thing can last for days. i did 4 years of tai chi to learn how to relax so i feel that I am calm. This thing actually can wake me too. Very annoying when I have it during the day as well.Doing some research with fibro apparently it CAN affect your chest muscles so maybe I have to learn how to strenghten them?. I get sick of the run around from doctors cos they assume that being a female I am over reacting grrr. Like to see them not worry about no sleep and not breathing or functioning properly during the day

Hi magickalmum, I have spasms in my chest muscles sometimes. It usually happens on my left side. I will have intense shooting pain across my chest and into my lungs. I cannot breath and first thought I was having a heart attack. I have to sit and lean over and hug my chest to get it to finally get better. Scary at first, but now am used to it. Doctor agreed - muscle spasms. Sometimes my chest muscles just feel tight. If I exert myself too much - vacuuming or something, then I feel as though I just can't get a big enough breath. I have not noticed this waking me up at night though. Yes, I have panic attacks too, so I know when I am tense then. But sometimes that spasm that causes sharp pain comes on when I least expect it. I did already have my heart checked out a couple years ago. Everything ok, except for very minor mitral valve prolapse. Hope you can figure yours out

Thankyou I hope I can get relief soon too as it is driving me nuts. I try now not to panic as have had this for a couple of years but it is definately getting worse now. I saw a throat specialist last november and seeing him again next week as i also have trouble swallowing. At first he just said to drink more water, geeez what a cop out that was. Did that and no better

I have problems breathing at night and sometimes during the day also. I had a sleep study done this month and was told I have mild sleep apnea and was recommended to speak to a GI specialist to see if I can have the lap band or gastric bypass to help me lose weight. I spoke to my dr. that referred me for the sleep study over the phone and understood him to say "I only quit breathing 6x an hour" and could possibly benefit from some nasal and sinus surgery but prefers I try to lose weight first since I have had sinus surgery before. I also have problems swallowing which is growing increasing worse as time goes on. He also said other than the sinus issues, all this leads back to fibro in one way or another. Its pretty scary when you wake up gasping or choking for air and can't swallow. I'm also like truckin_angel, I have lots of problems breathing after climbing stairs or even the slightest hill... and I used to run up and down stairs for the exercise.

I hope you all can find out the problem behind these issues and get them resolved very, very soon. As someone else said, we have enough issues without any new ones. It helps me to feel less crazy to know I'm not the only one having these problems but sure do wish they would find a cure for fibro so all of us can lead a bit more of a normal life again.

God bless! *hugs*

Hi OMG you sound just like me, I also have swallowing problems with all of this. I have been experimenting as well lately and feel that if I can get a dental night splint that it will help bring my jaw forward and help with the breathing while asleep. My lung specialist suggested it last time I saw him. The throat specialist last week said that i need to drink more water as I am dehydrated as well. I guess it is alot of things working together. I still cant find something that helps with the fibro though and that constant aching keeps me restless at night. As long as I can breath I think I can cope. I guess if you hear me yelling from there you will know I am still awake. Great to know I too am not alone, just wish the doctors could get this then maybe something might actually be done with research and understanding of what we are coping with.

Hugs Lee
