Good evening all-

I was wondering if ankle pain and swelling is common with fibro. I have had lots of foot problems including plantar fascitis, but now I'm having pain on the interior side of the ankle and it wraps around into my achilles tendon. When I touch the skin it is sore and burns and there is some swelling just in that area. Anyone else get this or have plantar fascitis?

Probably, jenjen because i have it too the swelling but mine is edema, what is plantar fasciitis? I got an xray of my left foot last week and on my heel i have one heck of a spur, so now i have a small one on the right and a lg one on the left. Soon i wont be able to walk. Going to a podiatrist as soon as i can get some money to get a consultation.Let me know what that is ok. Ive not met u by the way My name is Marge and write to me whenever u wish ok.

Hi Marge-

Thanks for your response. Plantar fascitis is inflammation of the plantar fasci (the long ligament that runs from the heel of your foot and along the arch). It's very, very painful. Feels like your walking on nails. I think some people with heel spurs have it too because the spur can rub on the ligament and cause irritation. The treatment is physical therapy and ultrasound treatments where they use ultrasonic waves to break up stuff. They also use anti-inflammatories. Anyway, I'm sorry to hear your heel spurs are causing you so much grief! I can't walk or stand for very long when my plantar fasc. flares up.Sure does limit things. I'll ask my podiatrist about the ankle swelling and pain next time I see him. Whatever is causing it, I want it to go away!

Hi Jen and welcome to the fibro forums. Do you by any chance take Lyrica? Lyrica can cause swelling of the hands and feet. Pain and swelling in the foot is another "great benefit" of fibro. I had a pain similar to that last year mostly in the achilles tendon area. The podiatrist said there isn't really anything that could be done for it. Later on I read an article where the achilles pain can be caused by fibro. My pain eventually went away and hasn't come back. On the inside of my right foot I get swelling on occasion where a soft lump about the size of a nickel appears. It is very tender to the touch but then it goes away. I had plantar fasciatis (sp?) around 10 years ago along with the heel spurs and ended up after months of therapy and injections having surgery on both feet. Took care of the problem. It was so very painful getting out of bed in the morning. I would hobble to the bathroom. As the day went on the pain would ease only coming back later in the later part of the day. Hang in there and I hope the pain goes away for you.

Hi Maggie,

Yes, I've had too many mornings having to hobble to the bathroom. lol. No, I don't take Lyrica. Sounds like the swelling is common with it. The only meds I take now (as needed) are Flexeril and Vicodin. Funny thing is I started noticing the achilles and ankle pain when I began taking the Flexeril. Coincidence? So the surgery works? That is good to know. I really want to avoid it if possible, but it may be necessary at some point. Guess I'll have to wait and see.

Yes the surgery worked for me. Since I am a slow healer it did take several months for the pain to subside. The only reason I had the surgery is because I am highly allergic to all anti-inflammatories....severe swelling of the throat.

Who knows, maybe the Flexril has something to do with the swelling.

Hopefully your podiatrist is familiar with Fibro and he can give you some insight on your swelling. My podiatrist isn't a Fibro fan...you know that type, it's all in your head!! I could scream when doctors have that attitude and there are so many of them.

Take care,

Charlotte

yes maggie that's exactly how my feet feel, it is so hard to get out of bed, it hurts so bad alot of stinging alot of pain, its kind of strange, it starts burning and all of a sudden (most of the time) its like i get a painful shot right thru it. I am not real sure about the flexeril making her swell, i don't take it and I'm still swelling like crazy, not that that matters at all. lol I have a referral for a podiatrist i guess as soon as i can ill go. nice chattin with u 2. later

I have the swelling (edema) on the inside of both ankles, can't really remember when it started. I think when I first got sick. It used to only be on the left.

I also have achilles tendinitis in both & my ankles do this like shift thing, real painful feels like they pop out of their socket.

I guess it's all fibro related.

The sweeling of my ankles and feet is what started my process into finding out what was wrong with me, and gosh darn it had to be fibro......grrrrr. Anyhow we have gotten that somewhat under control with a water pill but if i wear shoes and socks or even just socks and/or am on my feet for too long they swell right back up so I know mine was not any part of being from a med.

I have had plantar fascitis surgery and heelp spur surgery on both feet along with tarsal tunnel surgery on both ankles. My left foot is 100% now but my right foot has never gotten correct. It now has numbness in the heel along with extreme plantar fascitis pain and in the mornings it is very unbearable. I had the actual invasive surgery done on both heels and ankles as I was told the shockwave treatment does not always work...but I am not sure my right foot worked with the kind of surgery I had either. Maybe it is caused some by fibro? It is funny...after this last foot surgery is when I started to have problems and was diagnosed with the fibromyalgia.
