Hi Everyone,

I'm thinking of new questions to ask everyday. I have purchased a book from the Arthritis Foundation on Fibromyalgia and in that book it really stresses the importance of exercise in dealing with FM. It shows various stretches you can do to help with flexibility and mobility. My dr. really stressed the stretching thing too and recommended yoga. When you're soooo tired it's hard to think about exercise, right? lol. I'm wondering what your experiences have been with exercising with FM. Are there any exercises you would recommend? Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated!

Jen

Hey Jen! I wish I had a magical answer for this question! But I don't.

You'll probably find that you're just going to have to try things out and see what works for you.

My personal experience: Did yoga for a while. But my body was worse off. Tried Curves, that hurt even worse. Now I go to water therapy two to three times a week. I had to have a doctor's referral cause it's at the Wellness Center at the hospital. The water is 92 degrees and it's truly wonderful! For me anyway.

I wish you the best in whatever you try. Just remember, try to work "slowly" into whatever it is you choose.

Keep us informed on what you try and what works! You might come up with something none of us have tried before!

exercise does help but when you are in a flare it is sooo hard to do. I was able, a few years ago to start walking everydday and I got much better. I was riding bikes with the kids and everying. I felt almost normal. then we moved and ate out too much. I got out of my routine and now I'm back in the flare. it takes so much effort and will power to exercise everyday or at least three times a week but once you get there it's much better. I would say any exercise you enjoy and can stick with is the right one for you and like fibroforever said -slowy -is the way to go.

I posted already, but wanted to add something to the exercise thing.

I can't walk much- maybe around the block would be about it. It's a long block, but still...just makes my body hurt too much.

But! I did purchase a uni-trike this last Spring. I really enjoy it! My husband and I ride bikes together (Obviously weather permitting, since I live in Iowa.) and sometimes we'll ride around half the town and sometimes clear around town. Which clear around our town is 4 miles.

A little info about my bike. It's one of those bikes that sits low to the ground, only it has three wheels, instead of two. I got one with the handle-bars that are like the old fashioned bikes The really old bikes. LOL! Anyway, my husband adjusted them so they are down low. The pressure on my arms from a regular bike really hurt. So these bars are great. I also had the whole balance issue too. So, again this 'trike' helps. And since it's low to the ground it's easy to get on and off. Not to mention the comfy seat. ~My kids don't even mind riding with me. They say I look cool. Either that or they're just being kind.

Ohhh, so that's what that's called? A unitrike! LOL. How fun! My husband and I occasionally do the bike thing- he'd definitely like to do more of it. I have balance issues too, and when I ride on the street, especially a busy one, I got what I'd call overstimulated. All of the sights and sounds from the cars, etc. get me dizzy. I enjoy riding, and if we rode on more bike paths instead of the street, I'd like it more. I am going to start yoga soon. My mother-in-law gave me a gift cert. to a yoga studio for x-mas, so I've gotta do it- lol. Actually, I know it will be good for me. I've taken yoga before and really liked it. I didn't feel like it was doing too much for me physically- as far as losing weight-but it was mentally beneficial. And I guess if nothing else it will be a good way to deal with stress. I also took pilates for a while, but that was before all the aches and pains-lol. I think the pilates may be too intense now. All this talk of exercise has made me TIRED
