Hello everyone,

Anyone have hypothyroidism with FM? I am kind of confused because I have hypothyroidism and I read that it can cause micellaneous joint and muscle pain similar to FM. I also once read that a good percentage of those who have hypothyroidism meet the criteria for FM, especially women. I've talked to my rheumatologist about the possibility my thyroid issues could be causing the pain, but he doesn't seem to think so. Anyone know anything about a link between the two conditions or have a story of their own to share?

I dont know if they are related or not. I am having thyroid problems. The test for hypothyroidism was negative, but they did find 6 masses on my thyroid. Feb,28 I go in for my biopsy. I will ask if they think there may be a link.

the answer is YES! I have been down this road with my doctors. In my case I had to switch to a endocronoligst and an internist. They explained to me that regular Doctors really do not regulate thyroid very well. Specialists will have a monthly thyroid drawn if you are having fibro. The reason is sometimes other factors must be considered. You may appear to have enough medication in your system to control your hypothyroid and this is were regular Docs stop. The specialist know how to evaluate other tests to see if your thyroid is still hypo causing the same symptoms as fibro. On the other hand,,,,, we are taught that hypo thyroid and diabetes are often contributors to developing fibro. IN my case,,, my fibro has become quite severe and now I have found out I have a tiny pituitary tumor so my body is continuing to go thru periods of hypo thyroid even while being closely monitored. Now I have a neuro surgeon as yet another Doc!

Good luck to you both! I'm concerned because my thyroid antibodies are very high and my doctor doesn't seem to think my thyroid issues are that serious. She only looks at the TSH, and I've heard there are other things to consider so I'll be switching to an endicronologist soon. I've actually had thyroid problems since I was 12, but my mom couldn't get any of the doctors to treat me because of my age and it was usually the components of the thyroid that were off, not the TSH. Now I wonder if I've got damage from years of untreated thyroid dysfunction. It sounds like it could be the cause of the fibro.

I just found your post this morning.I was diagnosed some 20yrs. ago with hypothyroid. At the time I was having symptoms similar to fibro, as soon as I started taking the synthroid all of my symptoms went away and I felt great. Now 20yrs. later I am having similar symptoms all over again and was diagnosed with fibro!! My thyroid was checked and the results were fine. It does make one wonder if the two are linked somehow.. The symptoms can be very similar..

Wow! I have both too! I should have stayed with my endocrinologist! He was awesome! I just couldn't afford to go any more. I may try to find him and start going back.

I started to see an endocrinologist a year ago, I have to say that my doc. was doing an adequate job with me, but there is comfort in knowing that you are getting the proper treatment. I have to say that I am very impressed with my endo. I guess aging is not for sissies!!!

This may have nothing to do with my thyroid, but the last few days I have had pain in the thyroid area. I dont have any idea why. Or is it just that I am worried and getting pains and noticing them all more.
