Im new at this. Just joined because Im having a rough time today. I have FM and Lupus along with a list of other autoimmune problems. My Dr. (at the request of my dentist) put me on diazapam (valium) 10mg 3x day because the clenching was putting teeth at risk.

Not only did it cure the clenching, but it eased the chronic stiffness in my neck and shoulders. I even stopped some of my pain meds. Sure vallium is addicting, but so are the dozen other meds that all need to be weaned off of.

Hi PSK, and welcome!

I too am a jaw clencher. My dentist has not said that I should take anything for it, but did say that because I do it so much that I have worn down may teeth in area's, and that he can see grooves from clenching all the time. He said he didn't think I was grinding in my sleep or anything, just clenching. I told him that I do it all the time, I don't even realize it, but if I notice I make myself stop...wonder if that is another fibro thing, although I think I have been doing it forever!

Glad the diazapam is helping in more than one way =)! That is terrific, I hope it continues to give you some relief!

I think you will find this site very supportive and helpful, so I hope you stick around! Hope your day starts to get better soon.

Everyone has made me feel sooo welcome. Thanks! I also suffer from TMJ and have since I got my braces on as a teen. I've always wondered if Braces, TMJ, Jaw Clenching and neck ans shoulder pain are related. Any thoughts? Also, I was pushed into buying a very expensive night/day guard from my dentist. It kept me teeth from loosening any more, but locked my jaw several nights in a row, so I stopped using it. I think the drug store mouth guards are a cheaper way to see if a mouthguard helps, but you can't really wear them all day.

I used to clench my teeth really bad, I have TMJ and ended up having surgery on both tmjoints. I had to wear the night gaurds at night for a couple of years. Then I moved away from my mother-in-law and what do you know- problem dissapeared. turns out part of my problem was so much anger towards my m-i-l.I still have TMJ, always will , but I changed my habits and learned to not hold the anger in all the time but I rarely have pain in my jaw.

I have been clenching really bad. I also have Fibro. I never did it until about 6-8 months ago it started. My teeth are getting such a brunt of it and I'm losing pieces of my teeth. Is this connected to Fibro? The clenching?

Pamela {please}

I wish tons of love and hugs!

Yes I too notice that I clench badly. My mouth was very sore until I started using the mouth guard and it seems to help but I wake up clenching all the same. I have small spots worn on my teeth as well and another reason why I wanted to use the mouth guard. I sometimes cannot believe when I wake up and realize how hard I had been clenching.

maybe it's the pain that causes people to clench their teeth. Funny how I could get meds for the tmj pain easier than for fms.
