MDJunction to me

mabri"When I was diagnosed about 18 months ago with fibromyalgia, I didn't know where to turn. I got on my computer and looked for a support group where I could talk to other people with the same disease and get some help...Information, suggestions, mostly just what I can do now that I have this.....disorder/disease/syndrome...I didn't even know what to call it. I found MDJ, and yes, there was a support group for fibro. I started a post, and figured I would never get an answer. However, very quickly I was welcomed in, and became really involved in the group. I received help, support, friendship and the feeling of being truly cared about by these strangers who had become like family to me. Now, I have been here for about a year and a half...I have become a group leader, and love every minute of it. It is so wonderful to be able to help others. I still receive help and answers from the members in this group. The fibromyalgia is where I go to help, support, listen, care and even laugh. I don't know what I would do without this group." Okay, I'm a little worried now. My doctor called me at 10 pm last night to check on me on her way to the hospital. Since all she really got was the nurses version of what I said, she wanted me to tell her what happened when I was on the Plaquenil for those three weeks.

I started at the beginning. I told her the first week was fine; no side effects or anything. Week two I thought maybe I caught another virus because I was cold and weak and shaky and just flat-out exhausted. The next week I felt better for a few days and then had the horrible abdoninal pain.

She asked if it was nausea. I told her no, it was pain. Unbelievable pain. She freaked out. She has never had a patient react that way before.

She asked when my next appointment was and I said next month. She said, "No, you're coming in Wednesday. I have to see you and see if you're okay."

So I guess I have a doctor appointment tomorrow. I'm a little worried now, as I said. I've never had her freak out before. I feel much better now although I'm still weak and tired. No more fever or pain (other than my normal pain). But her reaction scared me a bit.

Anyhow, I just wanted to share because I thought maybe I wouldn't be so nervous. Smile

Oh, I probably spelled it wrong the first time. It's Plaquenil. She had prescribed it after she diagnosed me with mixed connective tissue disease (along with my fibro and everything else. whoohoo!).

I tried to call her Thursday when I was in so much pain but I just got her voice mail. Later that afternoon I called her office and spoke to her nurse and told her what was going on. The nurse tracked her down to tell her but apparently "severe abdominal pain" got translated into "nausea" so the doctor just said to stop it for two week and then re-start it at a lower dose.

I was a little surprised because it is listed as a "call you doctor immediately if..." side effect. So I expected her to tell me to come in or go to the hospital or something.

I guess it's a good thing she finally called me back last night.

Just to clarify, Plaquenil is the brand name for Hydroxychloroquine. It is used to treat malaria but also for treating lupus, MCTD and other related diseases. It is a disease modifying anti-rheumatic drug. If that helps.

It's actually a mild drug and my reactions are not normal. So if someone get prescribed this, don't freak out. You'll probably be fine. I'm just weird (my doctor even said so Smile ).

I have never hear of it. I don't know why they can't make drugs that work that don't have so many crazy side effects :? Keep us posted on what the doctor says and does.

Kat, I hope she told you to stop taking it until she sees you. I'm glad you're going in tomorrow. Some Rx's do that to people. Fine for a while then all of a sudden they have a reaction once the med gets built up in your system. Keep us posed on the outcome at tomorrows visit. Good luck

In a way, it's funny to me because it seems like most side effects are similar on most of my meds. I don't pay a lot of attention to them. Usually they aren't an issue anyhow; they just have to warn you to cover their butts.

This time I started having side effects but they were similar to my regular symptoms. Like my legs started hurting really bad one night. Well, that happens occasionally so I didn't think much of it. But my husband freaked and said "it's the meds!"

Some of the other issues made me think I just had another virus because I catch stuff all the time. I'm always sick.

But the abdominal pain was off the chart. All of us here know a thing or two about pain. I can handle quite a bit before I lose it because I am always in pain. But on a scale of 1-10, this was a 12. No joke.

I was crying and hugging my heating pad. I couldn't even get up to plug it in; my husband has to do it. So it makes me mad that the nurse made the doctor think it was just nausea. I wouldn't have called for nausea. It takes a lot for me to call in for help.

I guess it doesn't matter now. I'm just a little scared now because my doctor freaked out like she did. I absolutely adore my doctor though. I wish all of us here could just move to one island in the Keys and we could all share her. She could fire all her other patients and just see us. She is so wonderful.

Okay, I'm rambling. Sorry. I tend to do that when I take my pain meds for some reason. lol

BelaBo--yes, I stopped taking them Thursday when I called the office. At that time she had said to stop them for two weeks and then re-start them at a lower dose so my body could gradually get used to them. After we spoke last night she said she will give me something else. She also said I should take folic acid to help me get it out of my system.

Sometimes when you hear stuff like that it just isn't very comforting is it? Tho scary, I have faith you'll be ok. Are you feeling better now that you stopped taking it? Has the stomach pain gone away?

Yes, the pain and fever are gone. I'm still cold but nat as freezing cold as I was. Mostly now I'm just very tired. I feel like I've been unplugged. Smile Sort of like when you've been really sick for a while and it takes time to get your energy back.

I'll tell you something funny (although my doctor wasn't happy to hear it). 10 years ago when my fifth child was born, I wasn't able to feel when I had to pee unless my bladder was really full.

Today I am still like that to a degree. I don't really feel the sensation of a full bladder unless it's really full. During the day I just go every so often. If I wait until it's full enough to feel all the time, I get bladder infections. At night when I'm confy in bed, I don't want to get up for nothing so I press on my bladder to see if I have to pee. Weird, I know.

Well, this is how I discovered the pain, because when I pressed, I really hurt--BAD! I was surprised so I pressed around a little more and I couldn't believe how much it hurt. I decided to stop because of the pain (duh!) and was sure it would be better by morning. But it was worse and could hardly walk. No signs of infection though. So that's when I called the doctor.

I told her that last night and she was not happy. She wanted to know why she didn't know about this before. I never thought to tell her because I've been doing this for 10 years. I had told the doctor when my daughter was born and he said it wasn't that unusual. I guess 10 years later, it is. lol
