I will start out with a positive. I have been working on my weight and have managed to lose 20 pounds. I am very proud of myself, here comes the big but: i end up in so much pain every night after walking on my treadmill. It is not the good work out pain either it is the pain that makes you want to scream and cry. I am wondering if it gets easier or if i will always hurt afterwords. I walk at a slow rate and i feel really good when i do it. I know i have to get this weight off because i am way over weight and it is pushing the discs out in my back. The dr says they are significantly bulging. So i endure. I was wondering for anyone who exercise if it does get better. P.S. I HATE fibro!!!

Hi, have you tried a water exercise class. I go twice a week and though I do have pain the following night, I feel better once I get going again in the morning. While I am in the pool, I try often to consciously relax my muscles as I work. I also can only go a half hour instead of the whole hour. If I go the whole hour, I hurt so badly I don't want to go back. I've lost ten pounds, but can't seem to get lose more -- guess it's the chocolate I must have each day!

the pain is from the muscle not being used....keep on giong the first 3 months was the toughest for me and i did zumba and toning classes.. and cryed alot...but i was alo starting from square one...(i could barely walk) the only time it goes past the good work out pain is when i up the anty or just having a bad weather day my pain is always a 4-6 whenit reaches 8-9 or higher.. yeah i cry lol alot... but i go even if i hurt to the gym and do it at whatever level my body can that day... i have lost 50 pounds in a year and half.. i have 20-30 more to go but go at your pace if you have muscle relaxers take them afterwards and heat and a hot shower... relax you did it and be happy with what you have accomplished.. you will go further and do more the more you do Smile good for you!! 0 pounds is a huge accomplishment espcially on our medications... keep on going I am routing for you!

Good job KellyLynn

congrats on working out.

Perhaps if you joined a regular gym (yeah I know annoying) you could use their 4 different cardio machines to do your workouts - tredmill, bicycle, elyptical, an stai stepper. Why ! you say??? Because then you will be putting only 1/4th as much stress on the four different muscle groups used to do your cardio. And you will not be as bored . And you will get to vent to the person next to you - who also hates to work out. Might even meet some cute guys to help and encourage you.

Big gentle HUgs, Raoul

kellylynn, Way to drop 20#! Congratulations. All great suggestions above, including a cherry on top from Raoul...;-}. Long ago, while managing exercise prescriptions of patients and clients attending our outpatient cardiac rehab and fitness centre, we encouraged prophylactically dosing with an NSAIID 30-45 minutes prior to exercising. Warm up stretching is essential in order to prevent injury as well as cool down stretching to ease recovery for muscles. Warm Epsom salt baths/soaks can aid in pulling out waste by products and ease tenderness and soreness for the coming days.

I recently read an article in a sports medicine journal, geared toward safe and effective toning in fibro patients. One point that stood out for me was, if following a workout, you don't recover well, but, instead are more exhausted, the workout is too intense and self moderation and pacing are encouraged in order to gain a desirous outcome.

Monitoring your Target Heart Rate before, during and after an exercise routine will insure that you are working aerobically and not anaerobically. Aerobic metabolism is when you are utilizing oxygen sufficiently. Anaerobic exercise builds lactic acid in the muscles, leading to the pain, tenderness and soreness post exercise. It can also deprive your largest and most important muscle of oxygen rich blood.

Set your pace, hopefully under supervision initially, and don't cave to peer pressure attempting to keep up with the hot jocks around you. Keep up the great work!

Lisa

Kellylynn,

I was told once that when you think of weight that you have lost, to think of it in pounds of butter. If you stack up 20 pounds of butter, and look at it, it is HUGE!! 20 pounds is awesome! I'm so proud of you.

I too, have to start the exercise program. My new dr told me to start at 5 minutes a day, and work my way up til I can get to 30 min a day, 5 days a week. He also said to do the cardio workouts, to get your heart pumping and sweating...I have been doing a lot of walking the last few days, which is about all I can handle, but it is a lot more than I have been doing...(Don't tell Adewyn, I don't want to get fussed at)

Keep it up, and take the suggestions here, they are really good. HUGS for you!!

Please do not take anything I say as medical advice. I am not a doctor.
