OMG I must be off my rocker! I have smoked for about 30 years or so and today is my quit date! I have 3 cigarettes left before I throw the patch on for good. I need to quit for surgery but I also need to stay quitting for afterwards because it can cause bleeding ulcers and such on the type of surgery I am going for. I need all your prayers and support on this one. I have never tried before and last night had a melt down realizing I was letting of something that has been a part of me for over 30 years. I know in the long run I will be healthier because of it but it's still difficult!

Thanks!

Tawnya

The patches will cure the nicotine cravings, but it won't fix that hand-to-mouth and oral fixation that you're used to having. I have a suggestion!

My second husband worked with a man who was trying to quit smoking. He'd tried everything, even hypnotism, and still smoked. He thought about it for a while and went back to the hypnotist with an odd sounding request. He asked to be hypnotized and ordered that when he wanted a cigarette, he would reach into his pocket and get an Altoids Cinnamon mint instead.

This is the same type of motion that a smoker would have. He had to reach into his shirt pocket (same as cigs), take something out of his pocket (same as cigs), open the container (same as a hard-pack of cigs), take one out (same as cigs), raise it to his mouth (same as cigs), replace the container back into his pocket (same as cigs). The only thing he didn't do was light the mint! GrinGrin

He quit smoking! But he had a raging Altoids addiction!! W00tW00t

In addition to the patch, I suggest at least getting a mint in a container, so that when you want a cig, get a mint instead. You could even get yourself hypnotized to reinforce that hand-to-mouth motion. Worked great for him!

Oh! And CONGRATULATIONS! Quitting smoking is the best present you'll ever give yourself!

Wishing you the best. It's hard to do but you can do it! I agree with the habit part of it as well. Finding something to substitute that will help. Even if you don't want to do the mint thing, find something else. Gum, carrot sticks, celery, apple slices, etc. Something healthy though. A lot of people opt for unhealthy things to "fix" that habit and it causes weight gain. Food also tastes better after you quit smoking so getting something healthy will help that as well.

I don't know why that "reply" started a thread, but what I wanted to say was:

It also helps to allow yourself breaks that are equivalent to your smoking breaks. Some times the urge for a cigarette is an urge for a break.

Hope it's easier than you ever dreamed, and if it isn't keep at it! It's gonna be sooo worth it.

cinnamin toothpicks help...although they can be really strong! Also, hard candy helps cuz you still have something in your mouth.

Good luck and stay strong
