Last weekend I discovered a lump on my neck. After a few days I went to have it checked out and they said it was a swollen lymph node that got infected. Since starting the antibiotics I've been running a constant fever and otherwise feeling like crap. I was just wondering if this is something fibromyalgia related or just more bad luck for me?

Tegratol 300mgs daily
Klonopin 1-2mgs prn

Probably just bad luck. Lymph nodes filter the fluid that is between the muscles and everything else. Not blood, but that lubricating fluid that keeps everything from rubbing against other things. Think of it as oil for the body's engine. Anything that affects the whole body can cause a lymph node to swell. Lymph doesn't have an exit system from the body, like blood that gets filtered thru the kidneys and then voided from the body via the bladder. So, any infections you get can cuase a gland to swell. Is it just the one gland? Or a bunch of them?

Just as a "fun fact" the "Black Death" was named because of the lymph glands. The body would get infected, the lymph glands would swell with the filtered infection, there was no way for them to drain, so they'd die and turn black, and then a lot of times, burst thru the skin to drain. That's how it got it's name. Cancer such as Hodgkins Lymphoma can also cause a lymph gland to swell, as can metastisized cancer.

But 99.9% of the time, it's just a small time bacterial or viral infection and it resolves once the source of the infection is identified and treated. I had my lymph glands in my neck swell back in 1999, went thru 2 rounds of antibiotics, didn't help. They thought I had Hodgekins. But when they biopsied the glands, found just one of those antibiotic resistant bugs, so put me on a stronger antibiotic for almost a month and it finally cleared up.

I don't know of any connection between lymph glands and Fibro, but someone else might've heard about it.

Are you talking about Synovial Fluid?

a clear thixotropic fluid, the main function of which is to serve as a lubricant in a joint, tendon sheath, or bursa; consists mainly of mucin with some albumin, fat, epithelium, and leukocytes; synovial f. also helps to nourish the avascular articular cartilage.

Thanks for all the information. My doctor was in too big of a hurry to answer my questions. I hope I don't have to go through two rounds of antibiotics. I swear they're making me sicker than the infection.

If the use of antibiotics is giving you massive diarrhea ("@$$ pissing" my husband calls it) there's a very simple solution.

Antibiotics kill all bacteria in the gut. In the gut, there's both friendly bacteria that we need to digest food properly and absorb nutrients. Antibiotics destroy both the good kind and the bad kind of bacteria.

Eat some live culture yogurt (greek yogurt is especially good), drink some Acidopholis milk, or take Acidopholis capsules. That will put the friendly bacteria back in the gut where it belongs!

My daughter's neck is full of swollen lymph glands right now. They put her on the antibiotics and told her it could be months before they actually went down. So far, she hasn't had any fever or anything. If this continues, I would call the dr and see if you do need a stronger antibiotic. Definately eat the yogurt, though...(keeps you from getting a yeast infection too.)

Well after not being able to eat for three days and a fever that wouldn't break I went back to the doctor and they switched out my antibiotics. My fever finally broke this afternoon and I'm trying to eat again. Dealing with severe body pain. I can't even sit up by myself. I hope I'll be able to take my meds again tonight after not having them for three days. Thanks for all the advice. I'll get some yogurt when I know I can eat again.
