MDJunction to me

"I have been struggling with Fibromyalgia, Bipolar, Anxiety, Post traumatic Syndrome for quite some time and pretty much going it alone. I stumbled across MDJunction by accident. I stayed in the shadows and just watched for four days and then I joined, feeling relieved and excited to have found a safe place with alot of folks that I could relate to . It's proove to be medically and emotionally
helpful to me and now I can't go a day without coming in at least 4 or five times a day! I Love my family here.

Hi everyone!

I'm new to this site and I was wondering if you could all help me out. I'm 17 and I've been suffering from chronic pain since I was at least 3. It was only this summer that my doc decided that it's probably FM, and he refured me to Dr. Garner-Nix's pain management which is all about mindfullness.

Now I just started my classes which is great but I still have not discussed pain meds with my doc, becuase I know he's not very fond of pills and neither am I or my parents. However, this past year has been a real pain, lol so I was thinking of looking into the medicine aspect of things, so I can manage this a little better. Any advice with what meds worked best for you guys, or what to start with. I was put on Tylonal 3 when I went to the hospital one day because the pain was so bad but I didn't find it helped all that much...

Also I wanted to know what you guys do for that "fibro fog"? For me it's so bad at times that I can't even remember what I did all day! So if anyone has advice on this it would really help... maybe I can at least get through a school day without feeling like I wasn't there at all .

Thanks

Hi Sar and welcome to the group. I can't imagine being as young as you and suffering all this time. At least they have finally given you a diagnosis. Everyone is so different on what works for them and how they tolerate medications. Some say antiinflamatories won't help at all others say they do. for me I can use ibuprofen with some relief on not so bad days otherwise I use Ultracet which is tramadol and acetaminophen. I do not tolerate medications well and while these are mild they usually knock me out. I have been on Lyrica since October and have done really well with it. I have not had any issues with side effects as yet. Fibro Fog what can I say I really don't know what to do to make it better. It's very frustrating and embaressing at times. We laugh about it here a lot just because what else can you do. I hope you will read through the posts and find some useful information there is a lot here. welcome again

Provigil helps with the fibro fog. You shouldnt take it if you have mitral valve prolapse. I am sorry you have had this so long. Welcome to this site.

Hi sar!! Must be hard dealing with all of this at such a young age. As far as meds go everyone is different so talk to you pain management dr's and see what they suggest. May a suggest a mini taperecorder for school to tape lectures and stuff. Also notetaking becomes most important to remember dates and such. Anyway welcome to the group we'll be here if you need us just post or pm and we'll get back with you.

Thanks for the warm welcomes and fast posts!

It's nice to get some advice from people who know what's going on. All make sure to look at some of the other posts that way when I see my doc I have something to go on. The taperecorder is a great idea that I will definatly use for university but at the moment I'm still in highschool and they have too many rules about privacy and whatnot so I'll have to just keep up with the notetaking for now, but thanks for the idea! As for the fibro fog I see why everyone has a good laugh about it, because there really is nothing else to do

Anyways thanks again for the advice!

Sar

hi, I just wanted to say i liked seeing your message because it is so hard to find other young people with fibromyalgia. I am 21 and I was diagnosed 5 years ago. I can totally relate to going thru a day and having no clue what happenned. WOrk and school are sooo hard when you cannot think, concentrate, or focus.

When I was in nursing school we shared notes. That way if someone picked up on something I didn't, I didn't miss out on it. It is amazing how two people can listen to the same lecture and take different notes. It may be worth a try. If you don't know anyone in the class, the school guidence office may be able to help you.

Good Luck

thanks for the tips you guys

As for being young and having fibro it is a pain in the butt, but at least I have found some medication that works that doesn't make me feel disconnected from myself. I'm on amitryptaline and it was so nice to be able to go to my grad the other day and not have to worry about being in unbearable pain the next day. lol so far I'm the youngest person I have met who has fibro... I've had it since I was three but we only figured out what it was a year ago. It's nice to finally have some answers when we've been looking all my life. At least by having it so young I was able to work with what I could and couldn't do. I was able to figure skate competatively for 6 years before I decided to put my energy into my schooling, and although I'm disappointed that I had to give up many things that I loved, I know what means the most to me because I have learnt to prioritize and choose what is more important to me in life. I still push myself but by doing so I still am able to find my limits and not miss out on life It's amazing what people take for granted in life.

Anyways, as for university I was accepted into the nursing program, and I actually just got my first stethoscope today I was so excited becuase it made it that much more real. I will have a good friend of mine taking the same classes as me so between us we'll be able to chatch most of what the prof says, so thanks for the idea it will diffinatly help a ton!

Have a great day you guys... and girls

Sar
