I am currently looking for a doctor and all the stories I've read make me not even want to step foot in a doctor's office. I am getting anxiety just thinking about it, on top of all the dumb doctors and the paranoid suspicious ones... I am only 22 years old.. in the past this has caused them to totally blow me off or think im a drugie.. I dont care if they give me pain meds or whatever as long as what they do give makes it go away, but the minute I say something about pain they wont even let me finish my sentence, cut me off and say im not giving u pain medication... and wont listen to any of my symptoms, they just block me out after that...so i get upset and leave. That was the last time I was trying to find a doc 3-4 years ago. I just really feel stuck like I just have to live like this forever, and what kind of quality of life can you have in constant pain, with not 1 minute a day of relief... Everybody was telling me to just vent and it looks like I did..lol. Thats a looong paragraph. So any suggestions on things I can do in the meantime?

Im trying to keep my spirits up but im at the point of giving up! You guys should all just be my doctors so I dont have to go, tell me what to do and I'll do it!

Kels, that is just awful that you have to suffer needlessly because doctors think you are "drug-seeking" or an addict just wanting to get high.

Now that you have the FM diagnosis, maybe you could get into a pain clinic where they routinely treat patients with the chronic pain of FM. I've heard some horror stories about the pain clinics too; and like with the doctor search, it comes down to finding the right one. Some just want you to soak in hot tubs and do P.T. all day every day before they will prescribe pain meds and some will concentrate primarily on nerve block injections and don't want to try oral pain meds. If you live in a large metropolitan area there is likely to be more than one pain clinic in the area, however. When you see your new doc, perhaps you could get a referral to one of them...you probably have a better chance of being listened to without judgment and getting better pain meds there.

Welcome Kels!

You just vent away! We're here for ya!

I'm sorry that you're so discouraged with doctors. If you wanna move to Iowa, you can go to my rheumy- he's the greatest!

I hope that you find a good one. One that listens to your every concern, every pain, every idea, etc. They are out there. Some people have to try several before they find a good one. I know it's exhausting, but hang in there.

Once again welcome!

Amy

I feel your pain. I was having my last dr understand that I was in a lot of pain. But I do know that once we get insurance again that I am going to go to a rhumy because everything I've researched and learned from here proves that they understand a lot better the my GP. I just want to feel better and function better then I do no. I know that venting helps me feel better cause i'm able to get it off my chest and then not dwell on it.

Thanks everyone! i dont know what I need at this point but whatever it is, bring it on! I feel like I will go crazy if I have to feel like this for another day, week, month, etc. with no end in sight. If you told me to run around the block in the freezing cold and it would help... I would (even though just thinking about it makes me hurt more). I didn't even know FM exsisted until I was diagnosed, all that I know I have read off the internet in the past couple months, my old family doc didn't have much to tell me except for that I had undoubtedly had it... you guys are my link to sanity right now

kels Maybe when you go to a new dr. go as getting a second opinion. tell them all your symptoms leaving the pian for ;ast and see if they treat you any differently. Your right so many are paranoid and don't want to prescribe but if they make the diagnosis then you can say I was told that before and wanted a second opinion what do you feel treatment options are? I think sometimes a Dr.'s ego gets in the way. They feel they have to be on control. It's different for them to give you a prescription because they made a diagnosis, than for you to say this is what I have can I have something to make it better.

When you go to the rheumy just list your symptoms and tell him that you have been diagnosed with fibro. Maybe that way they wont think you are looking for narcs. Soaking in a hot bath water with a cup of epsom salts might help. Moist heating pads help too. Pacing your activities is a must. Thermacare heating pads help too. Capsaicin cream helps also but make sure you throughly wash your hands afterwards. Hope this helps you. take care.
