MDJunction to me

Hazeldee"MDJunction means that I no longer have to feel like I am the only person in
the world with pericarditis. It means that I can talk to others who know
how stressful and how painful having pericarditis can be. It means that I
connect with others to discuss treatments that have or haven't worked for us, so that we have a leg to stand on. I think that having my friends at
MDJunction has allowed me to better mentally and emotionally process my
diagnosis and what it means to me. I feel so lucky to have this community
available to me. I use MDJunction as a way to use my experience to help
others. Reaching out to help others is the only solace I have found since
being diagnosed with pericarditis.

I have been diagnosed with fibromyalgia and struggle with the pain medications interacting with other medication. On wedsday, things began to get even worse. I was at work when my legs started to swell. It kind of scared me, so I left to call the doctor. While driving, I felt what seem to be pockets of fluid in my chest when I would turn the wheel of my car. I went home and tried to relax, and put up my feet but the swelling continued. At that point, I struggled to get up from the couch to go to the bathroom. When I stood, I felt all this fluid rushing towards my legs, making my legs feel like they were 500 pounds. My face swelled to the point where they tingled. I am now swollen all over. I went to the emergency room today, only to be confronted with a doctor who I will term fibromyalgia UNfriendly. He talked to me like I was crazy, telling me that he cannot tell if I am swelling, only that I claim to be! What?! Really!? How about the red bumps under my skin, my shiny hands, or ankles having heavy indentions where my socks had been. He was an older doctor, and everytime I would mention the fibromyalgia, he always said, well, I dont know that much about it, you probably know more than me if I had done research on the subject. Oh, so know I knew he thought that fibromyalgia was a myth. Maybe he thought I was drug seeking, but if I were, then wouldnt I have asked for something more than a 800 milligram Motrin? He didnt even recommend a follow up appointment. Regardless, I am going to see my PCP tomarrow, and I am going to ask him about a possible thyroid problem. I appreciate any support on the subject. Swelling can be a symptom of many many things. Severe edema is a big issue and should be dealt with as soon as possible. Edema is readily visible by doctors who have any training at all. They should have looked for pitting. The fact that you are saying that it's all over including the face all the way to the legs is concerning to me. It's possible that it could be an allergic reaction to a med or food. Or it could be something totally different.

If you experience any breathing issues like shortness of breath or wheezing, you should get to a dr right away. Hopefully your PCP can tell you something in the morning. I would also suggest taking pictures of the swelling now if you have a camera. If it's more swollen in the morning, you can show the dr and judge how much more. If it's gone down, you can still show the dr the pictures and hopefully he can help figure it out.

Absolutely take pictures and see your Dr...try to write down everything you ate 48 hours before the swelling, what you were doing, meds or supplements you took, take that with you to the Dr it may be helpful....

Keep us posted

I have had swelling in my hands, but can't say ever had it all over. Sorry that the ER dr was such a jerk! Unfortunately, he's just one of many. Great idea about the pictures...that may help a lot. Let us know what you PCP says about it. HUGS
Please do not take anything I say as medical advice. I am not a doctor.

wow, what an ass! That's why ER doctors of all doctors should be required to have continued education every month for new diseases and syndroms! I am so sorry that happened to you, but what about medication? I know that it can be a side effect of some of the fibro meds...let us know how it goes and good luck Smile

I'm an Advocate

Are you sure the ER doc actually looked at you? or did he just walk in looking at his clipboard the whole time? I mean sheesh he couldn't tell if you were swelling or not! Sorry about you having to deal with the worst kind of doctor those who suffer from rectalcranialjointdysfunction(head up butt problem). Hopefully your pcp was able to help you determine the cause of your swelling and bring you some relief.
