Is Fibromyalgia purely physical or does it have a psychological component as well?

My wife displays very similar symtomps, but she's bipolar. Can it be just a manifestation of her mental illness? Both? Can a mental illness lead to Fibromyalgia?

Her aching all over, her constant fatigue... can it be just physical? Could she have developped her mental condition from having fibromyalgia first, with nobody understanding or giving much thought to what she's going through?

Or there's no connection?

Hi there,

You ask an excellent question. Unfortunately, in my experience and from both research as well as information from several physicians, Fibromyalgia is still not a syndrome that can be tested for through blood tests, radiological scans, or neurological testing. Thus far, all of the primary physicians I have spoken with have all admitted to a reluctance to diagnose anyone as having Fibromyalgia due to the broad nature of this disease and refer their patients to a Rheumatologist or an Endocrinologist.

Rheumatologists mostly look at several symptoms when diagnosing Fibromyalgia, namely reaction to pain throughout various pressure points as well as muscular pain. There are also a myriad of other symptoms associated with Fibromyalgia such as a general fogginess or inability to concentrate, constant ringing in the ears, and even seizures.

In my opinion, a great source of information related to Fibromyalgia and some of the best practices for treatment are in a book called "The Fibromyalgia Advocate" by Dr. Devin J. Starlanyl M.D. There is a wealth of information in this book as well as amazing perspectives on the disease.

I apologize for not having more definitive information related to your wife's condition, but I highly suggest asking your physician to consider a referral to a Rheumatologist that either specializes or is familiar with Fibromyalgia to get at the minimum a good starting point.

Best Wishes,

CJ

Thanks a lot, Siskoray. Didn't even cross our mind to go to a Rheumatologist, in fact, we had no idea where to turn. Will ask my GP for a refferal.

Again, thank you. Didn't even know which speacialty deals with all this.

Very glad to be of help. I hope you are able to get more and better answers from a Rheumatologist. I'm told that these doctors handle most Fibromyalgia cases, but apparently Endocrinologist as well as some Primary Physicians have been known to take up the cause as well, so there might be some in your area. I've seen this site bring up specialist lists that are specific to city and state and you might try http://ratemds.com/index.jsp as they specialize in finding doctors in your neighborhood.

Best of luck and let us know how everything goes if you would. We'd love to know how things continue to work out for you.

Best wishes.

CJ

timjc, my understanding now of fibromyalgia is that it's really Lyme disease, a bacterial infection. The spirochete bacteria invade the nerves and the body tissues and cause systemic symptoms. Every symptom mentioned here is a Lyme symptom. You can look at the big list of symptoms at www.anapsid.org -- scroll down and click on Lyme Disease, then click on Diagnosis, then Master Symptoms. I simply read through them when I first found out about FM being Lyme, and saw how many I had, after 25 years of thinking I had fibromyalgia. Bipolar symptom is on the list too. Think all body systems messed up and you will begin to understand Lyme disease. We are all beginning to find out this is really what we have. You can learn more about Lyme at www.lymenet.org. People usually get it from an infected tick, but it may also come through other means of transmission, including in utero. This is a huge disease to study. It uses up our nutrients. It enters our cells and wrecks havoc with them. lymenet has a lot of discussions about diagnosis and all kinds of treatments.
