MDJunction to me

jenniferdiva"MDJunction has been just an amazing support for me. The people who are on mdj are so nice! Unlike the many other support sites that I have been on. I have made several friends on mdj who are so supportive and so educated about mental illness. Of course non of us are doctors, but we certainly offer each other hugs, opinions, and advice. I have learned a great deal from my friends on mdjunction. I am also encouraging other people who suffer from mental illness to come on to MDJ. It can be a life line." (jenniferdiva)

UNUM had been paying me long-term disability since August, but they just informed me that they will no longer do so. Has anyone here been approved or denied long-term disability by UNUM Insurance? Did they ask you to see an adverse doctor? What reasons did they give for denying disability? This is a real kick in the head since nothing about my condition has changed, and I'm at a loss to figure out what additional proof they could possibly require from my doctors. I haven't received their letter yet laying out the appeal procedure, but any information anyone can share with me in the meantime would be greatly appreciated. The stress from this news has, needless to say, NOT improved my pain situation.

Thanks,

Barb

Hi Barb, welcome to our fibro family. Lots of great people here that can help you. What were you on LTD for? I processed and paid claims under the disability policies my company sold. Usually an LTD policy will last for up to 24 months before benefits are exhausted. However, Insurance companies compile a listing of illnesses and approximately how long the disability should last. Check with your doctor to see if the insurance company had contacted him about your disability. If they haven't contacted your physican, write them a letter asking why your disability benefits were cut and what the process to reinstate the benefits.

Thanks for your reply Jan. My LTD was for IBS/Fibromyalgia. The Short-Term Disability was for IBS. Then, when that ran out, I switched over to Long-Term. Shortly after that, my Fibromyalgia was diagnosed. My doctor(s) have been in touch with the insurance company all through this process. And I've only been getting the LTD payments for 6 months. I do plan on appealing this decision. I have no choice; I'm in no condition to work.

Thanks,

Barb

I am so sorry to hear that. I don't know why they give us so much troubleAngry It's really a shame because so many people on our site alone are trying to get disibilty. Can you imagine how many other over all of the junction are trying? And the judge gives a reply in what - about 15 minutes? I just don't understand it.

I hope things turn around soon.

Well, I do not have any advice for you, but I would like to welcome you to our group anyway. I am sure you will get good advice here.
Favorite Poem :
It is such a relief when you first find out.
That the pain really does have a name,
And then you will ask (and everyone does),
"Just where can i place all the blame".
No matter the limits, no matter the pain,
There's no evil, cruel "Master Plan".
It just simply happens, It just simply is.
You adapt, and you change what you can.
But even with the knowing the best and the worst,
All the pitfalls the future could hold,
You still have a choice, you quit or you fight.
You determine the story that's told.
And every small step that we take, my dear friends,
Each battle that we slowly win,
Just credits the love and the caring we share
With the FMily that we call our friends.

I want to thank all of you for your replies regarding my denial of disability for my fibromyalgia. It was suggested to me that I get a Functional Capacity Evaluation from a Physical Therapist associated with my local hospital. It's a 2 hour test to see just how feasible I am for "competitive employment." Needless to say . . . I am not! And the test proved it! I have sent this document (signed by my doctor) to UNUM Insurance, and now the ball is once again in their court. I'll keep you all apprised.
