I've been through this with legal aid and the were no help at all. I was actually encouraged to withdraw my claim. How do I find a good lawyer? I've never had one before. I don't know what to look for, what questions to ask... Any recommendations are welcome.Smile

Start in your phonebook under attorneys. There will probably be several there that do disability cases. Most will not charge you unless they win your case. And if they do win, most states will put a cap on how much they are paid...usually a percentage of your back pay, not to exceed such and such dollar amount.

You can ask them questions like how involved will they be in your case, will they file all necessary paperwork for you, and will they gather all records for you. You might even ask them what percentage of cases they have won.

Then trust your judgement. If they are gentle with you, professional, and explain everything to you step by step until you understand it, then they might be right for you. Be sure to ask what percentage of your back pay they will take, and make them tell you the cap (top amount) on this.

Above all, I feel you must feel comfortable with them. Good luck in your search.

Everyone always recommends Allsup. All they do is disability and they know their stuff. They win a lot of FM cases. They aren't really lawyers, they are advocates. But the contract and fees are the same and they are treated the same by SS.

I would be using them myself except there was some sort of mix up by SS when I fired my old attorney and so they didn't want to deal with that.

The attorney I have now is local. That can be important because they will know the judges that are likely to handle your case and be familiar with the area.

I would not recommend going with any lawyer that advertises on TV. If they have to do that, then they aren't very good attorneys.

I started with an advocate that works with my counselor. I am the first case they have lost is over one hundred cases. She was familiar with the judge and said that she has never seen him behave like that. (he was almost cruel to me during the hearing) She did nothing to defend me when he was standing and waving his arms while questioning me and accusing me of things that wasn't true. My denial was 26 pages long. After that I hired Binder and Binder. They were reccommended to my father after they one a case for one of the people he has insured. They are on TV, but I still hope they are good. They are holding my life in their hands.

I am using Allsup. You can find them at www.allsup.com. Or just google SSD lawyers and you will find a BUNCH! Good luck!
